Description	:	Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 18 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Winner. Burial will be in the Winner Cemetery. Visitation will begin on Friday, September 17 from 4-7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM at the church. Frances Nelson, of Winner, SD, passed away on Monday, September 13, 2010, at the Avera Gregory Healthcare Center, in Gregory, SD at the age of 98 years, 8 months and 20 days. Frances (Mayes) Nelson was born on December 23, 1911 in Emporia, KS to George E. and Mabel (Tweedy) Mayes. She was raised and lived in Tripp County for 98 years. She grew up in the Ideal Community on the homestead of her parents. She was the valedictorian of her class in 1929 and went on to Huron college and to Kansas State Teacher's College. She taught in the rural schools for 19 years. She retired from teaching in 1974 but continued to help the youth by volunteering to tutor any youngsters who wished to receive her help. Frances was involved in many organizations including BPW, Winner Area Retired Teachers, a Charter member of Friends of the Library, Hospital Auxiliary and Historical Society. She received the local and state ESA Diana Award and the BPW woman of the year, the ARC volunteer of the year and the Historical Society Outstanding Member. She had a wonderful talent for writing and co-chaired the Diamond Jubilee book in 1984. Among other things she put together the stories from the retired teachers. One of her high honors was being chosen Tripp County Centennial Queen in 2009. In 1935, she married Raymond Storm and they adopted two children: Roger and Linda. After Raymond's passing in 1972, she married Selmer Nelson in 1990. Grateful and blessed to have shared her life are her family whom she loved deeply and always had time for: her daughter Linda (Verloyn) Bettcher; her granddaughter Tammy (Larry) Scholz, grandsons: Tim, Troy, and Tony Bettcher, great granddaughter Ashley Aasheim and great grandsons Dustin Aasheim and Samuel Scholz, one step-daughter; Janice (Larry) Killian, two step sons: Wayne (Pat) Nelson, and Jim (Pam) Nelson, two sister-in-laws: Mabel Mayes and Faye Mayes, and many nieces and nephews and numerous other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents: George E. and Mabel Mayes; husbands: Raymond Storm and Selmer Nelson, her son Roger Storm, her sisters: Geneva (Mayes) Miller and Caryl (Mayes) Brant, her brothers: Lawrence, George, Charles, Fred and Marvin Mayes, along with four nieces and four nephews. Frances Nelson wrote Memories of a Homestead Child in 2003.
