Smith, Birmingham, will be attributed to injuries he received in a highway accident south of Fairfield Friday. He passed away Monday morning while being prepared for an operation to set a broken hip he suffered in the mishap. He had been suffering from a heart condition prior to the accident. Patrolmen said the facts concerning the accident and death will be sent to the State Department of Public Safety in Des Moines, and the decision will be made there whether or not the death was caused by the accident. Smith was riding in a pickup truck Friday when the accident occurred near the Raney schoolhouse south of Fairfield on hightway No. 1. He was riding with George Bailey who operates a mail truck. O.H. Brown, Hillsboro, was also a passenger in the truck. The mail truck was going north on the highway when a rear dual wheel from a tandem lowboy trailer came off and crashed into the front of the smaller truck. The lowboy truck, driven by Henry Rubey, route 4 (sic), Fairfield, was going south. The crash forced the pickup truck off to the side of the road but it didn't turn over. It was badly damaged however. Smith suffered a broken hip and was taken to the Jefferson county hospital. The driver of the truck suffered cuts and bruises. Officers said they were told Smith was on the way to Fairfield to see his attending physician when he was injured. The said they were also told that he had been suffering from a heart condition. When he was on the operating table Moday (sic. Monday) morning, he died as doctors began preparing him for the hip operation. Born in 1874 Frank H. Smith, 80, was born Sept. 23, 1874, near Bentonsport in Van Buren county, the son of the late Moses and Matilda Craven Smith. On Dec. 31, 1893, he was married to Nellie S. Carter who passed away in 1913. He was later married to Mary Jane Lathrop on July 3, 1915 and she died in 1924. On June 25, 1925, he married Minnie B. Smithburg and she died in 1950. He is survived by the following children: Orval and Loran Smith, both of Fairfield; Carrol Smith, Birmingham; Willis Smith, Newton; Mrs. Hazel Burrows, Fairfield; Goldie Pruden, Fairfield; Mrs. Pearl Stone, California. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister and a son. Last rites will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Weston Behner funeral home with the Rev. H.C. Stine in charge. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
