Mr. Arts began feeling ill when he and Mrs. Arts were driving home from Graham park, where they had attendee the Carroll-Sac City football game. Mr. Arts began feeling ill when he and Mrs. Arts were driving home from Graham park, where they had attendee the Carroll-Sac City football game. After arriving home, he lay on the davenport a short time before going upstairs, where he collapsed as soon as he entered his room. Death came shortly afterwards. Funeral services will be at 9:30 Monday morning at St. Lawrence church, with the Rev. Fr. Arthur S. Poeckes offering the requiem mass. Burial will be in the Carroll cemetery. The body is resting at the Huffman Funeral home and may be viewed there by friends until the time of the rites. The rosary, led by the Rev. Fr. Poeckes will be prayed at the funeral home at 8 o clock Sunday night. Mr. Arts was a member of one of Carroll’s well-known pioneer families. The second son in the family of eight children of William and Christine Arts, he was born at Breda November 4, 1871. After his graduation from Carroll high school in 1899 he attended Notre Dame university, Notre Dame, Ind., and Bayless Business college, Dubuque. He was married to Mary Mikesell, a teaching in the Hartington, Neb., schools. June 2, 1898, in Omaha, Neb. On June 2 of this year, the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Arts established their home in Petersburg, Neb., where Mr. Arts was in the mercantile business. In 1912 they located in Carroll, where Mr. Arts took over the management of The Carroll Times, which was started through his father’s influence in 1897. He continued as manager and publisher of The Times until his retirement in 1936, when that newspaper was merged with the Carroll Daily Herald. Mr. Arts had been prominent in work of the democratic party and had served as treasurer of the democratic county central committee more than 20 years when he resigned from the post about two years ago. He belonged to the St. Lawrence church. He was also a member of the Elks lodge and Charles Carroll Council No. 780, Knights of Columbus. Surviving with his wife are two sons and one daughter: Graydon Arts, Knoxville; Mrs. Elmer Wood (Gretchen), Albany, N.Y. and Stanford Arts, Carroll; three grandchildren: Lee Ann and Michael Arts and Happy Wood, two sisters, Mrs. J.C. Heider (Augusta) and Mrs. May Hamilton, both of Carroll. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William and J.C. Arts, and three sisters, Miss Emma Arts, Mrs. F.J. Pielsticker (Louise).
