Arts, 57-year-old lifelong Carroll resident, who died suddenly of a heart attack yesterday afternoon about 2 o clock at his home at 1005 North West street, will be held Thursday morning at 9 o clock at St. Lawrence church. Joseph Arts was the son of the late William and Christine (Manemann) Arts and was born at Carroll, Ia., on Sept 17, 1878 His parents had pioneered from Illinois, settling in this county. He was reared to manhood in this city and attended parochial and public schools in the acquirement of an education. On April 27, 1904 Mr. Arts was joined in wedlock to Miss Carrie Meyers, a native of Rosell township, Carroll county, Ia., a daughter of Henry and Nellie (Rosauer) Meyers, both of whom were born in Illinois, taking their abode among the early settlers of this county near Templeton, Ia., before retiring to Carroll. Following his marriage, Mr. Arts entered the German American Bank in the capacity as assistant cashier. In October, 1910 he became vice-president of the bank. He also engaged in the furniture and undertaking business in association with his brother, William A. Arts, until they sold out in October, 1910. Mr. Arts was also at that time trustee of the Carroll Times which his father was the president. Mr. Arts later was cashier of the American Saving’s bank until 1920. He was city treasurer for several terms and was a delegate to the democratic national convention at Baltimore at the time of the nomination of President Wilson. Mr. and Mrs. Arts were the parents of seven children: Baldwin, Mrs. Ed Holders(Bernadette), Christine, Gilbert, Mrs. John Lambert/Jenkins(Arlowine) and William C. who are twins and Leo. All the children, who with their mother survive, are living at the Arts home with the exception of the two married daughters and married son, Baldwin, who lives in the Selzer apartment. Mr. Arts also leaves four grandchildren. Mr. Arts father died in September, 1910 and his mother passed away in June, 1924. He had seven brothers and sisters, all of whom live in Carroll with the exception of the late Mrs. Louise Pielsticker. They are: W.A. Arts, Frank Arts, Mrs. J.C. Heider, Mrs. Frank Rettenma, Mrs. May Hamilton and Miss Emma Arts. Mr. Arts was fraternally identified with the Knights of Columbus in the fourth degree and the Modern Woodmen of America. For 15 years he was connected with the Carroll fire department. He and his wife have both been faithful members of the Catholic church.
