Description	:	William A. Arts, 71, who had spent virtually all of his life in Carroll, succumbed suddenly at 8:15 this morning at his room, his death being attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage. Fully dressed, Mr. Arts was sitting in a chair when death claimed him. He had been in impaired health for several years. The body is at the Luft Funeral Home, where it will remain until the rites. The funeral services will be at 8:30 Friday morning at SS. Peter and Paul’s Church. William A. Arts, a son of William and Christine Arts, who were early day residents here, was born at Galena, Ill., July 26, 1869. He was eighteen months old when his parents brought their family to Carroll county. In 1872 they located in Carroll. He supplemented his preliminary education in the public and parochial schools of Carroll by attending Notre Dame University, South Bend, Ind., for four years Following his return to Carroll, he worked for one year as book keeper for the firm of Arts & Manemann, general merchants. June 1, 1888, he secured a position in the German Bank of Carroll county, which had been established by his father. He continued in this work until Feb. 1, 1898, when the bank bought out the old Bank of Carroll, which was the first financial institution established here. The name of the concern was changed at that time to the German-American Bank for many years. Subsequently the name of this bank was changed to the American Savings Bank, which is no longer in existence. Mr. Arts other business enterprises included about fifteen years spent with his brother, J.C. Arts, in the furniture and under-taking business, which they sold out in October, 1910. In later years Mr. Arts served as city clerk of Carroll. He had also held the office of city treasurer for a long period of time, and for twenty years he had been at the head of the Carroll fire department. Sept. 7, 1892, Mr. Arts was married to Miss. Emma Kekevoet, who died Oct. 29, 1910. They were the parents of three children, two of whom survive. They are Mrs. Harry Farrell (Charlotte) and Norbert Arts, both of Pasadena, California. Another son, Alfred, died in September, 1911. Surviving with his two children above named are four grandchildren and the following sisters and brother; Miss Emma Arts, F.H. Arts, Mrs. F.J. Rettenmaier (Anna), Mrs. J.C. Heider, (Augusta), and Mrs. Mae Hamilton, all of Carroll. One brother, J.C. Arts. And one sister, Mrs. F.A. Piesticker (Louise), preceded him in death.
