Description	:	Francis Helenthal Born Jan. 26, 1923, in Keo-kuk, he was the son of John R. and Anna M. Smith Hellenthal. On March 29, 1948, he married Caroline L. Gittings in Keokuk. Mr. Helenthal was in the news, advertising and publishing business for more than 42 years. A native of Keokuk, he spent more than 30 of his newspaper years at the Daily Gate City. Read More	Francis Helenthal Born Jan. 26, 1923, in Keo-kuk, he was the son of John R. and Anna M. Smith Hellenthal. On March 29, 1948, he married Caroline L. Gittings in Keokuk. Mr. Helenthal was in the news, advertising and publishing business for more than 42 years. A native of Keokuk, he spent more than 30 of his newspaper years at the Daily Gate City. After being a newspaper delivery boy in his youth, his career began as a sports writer and reporter for the Daily Gate City in 1940. He then was advertising director from 1954 to 1970. In November 1972, he founded and became publisher of the Shoppers Free Press of Keokuk. He was best known for his column "Keys of Keokuk," which include hundreds of local history stories of interest. Beginning in 1982, Mr. Helenthal was publisher of the Daily Gate City until he retired. He was a member of the International Advertising Executive Association for more than 25 years. He was a 1940 graduate of St. Peter's High School. He entered the Army in 1943, serving in the New Guinea and Luzon Campaigns in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a key figure in the funding and development of the current toll-free Keokuk-Hamilton Mississippi River Bridge. He served on the board of directors of the Keokuk Chamber of Commerce, originated the "Historic and Scenic Tour" of Keokuk, and developed the "Illiamo Tourist Guide," distributed nationally. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hamilton, the Knights of Columbus, Fraternal Order of Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fraternal Order of Eagles and American Legion. He enjoyed writing, golf, oil painting, bowling, horseshoes, playing cards, and table tennis. In his younger years, he excelled at fast-pitched softball for the Keokuk Conoco Oilers. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Stephen K. Helenthal, William F. Helenthal and James M. Helenthal, all of Keokuk, and John J. Helenthal of Keokuk; three daughters, Carol Ann Huffman of Hamilton, Teresa M. Klein of Seattle and Barbara J. Helenthal of Keokuk; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Margaret Harmon of Keokuk. He was preceded in death by one son. Visitation will be from 3 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Greaves Mortuary in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. A Christian vigil service will be at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian burial for Mr. Helenthal will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hamilton with the Rev.
