Overbrook Citizen, April 1, 1954 Francis Owen Kinney was born May 5, 1870 at Ridgeway, the son of John and Zurilda Sanders Kinney. He passed away at Stormont-Vail Hospital In Topeka, April 19, 1954. Mr Kinney was a member of one of the old pioneer families of Kansas. He lived in and near Overbrook all his life, with the exception of two years in Bunker Hill. Mr Kinney was united to Huldah Alice Thompson, February 9, 1893. Mrs Kinney lives at the family home in Overbrook. Four children were born to this union, Myrtle Lee Reed of Cheyene, Wyoming, Francis Owen Kinney Jr of Portland, Ore., Helen Perryman of St Louis, Mo., and LaVere K McLane of Minneapolis, Minn. Mr Kinney was active in the life of the community. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Carbondale and Hurricane Grange of Overbrook. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by a sister, Mrs Art Reed of Carbondale, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at Overbrook Methodist Church Wednesday, April 21, at 2:30 pm with Rev Gail Garst in charge of the service, Max Friesen accompanied by Mrs Theron Bryson on the organ provided the music. Pall Bearers were Ernest Dodge, Edwain Foster, Earl Heffner, Lawrence Madded, Cecil Krause and Charles Widau. Interment was in the Overbrook Cemetery. "For the frist two years of their marriage, Frank and Alice Kinney lived in a soddy in Russell Co Ks and looked forward to making their permanent home there. Unfortunately, a crop that looked very promising early in the year was lost and later a prairie fire swept across their farm causing further destruction. They packed up and moved back to Osage County where, a few years later, they bought the family farm two miles west and two miles north of Overbrook." "Frank Kinney was active in the life of his community and was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Carbondale and the Hurricane Grange of Overbrook. He fed cattle, raising some of the grain and buying the rest. During the Depression I remember Him saying that he had sold his cattle for less money than he had spent on grain. There was a short period of time when he sold life insurance-for Security Benefit Association as I recall."
