Carlson Frank August Carlson, a well-known and beloved resident of Stratford, was born August 24, 1869 and died at 4 a.m. Thursday morning April 3, 1947, at the age of 77 years, 7 months and 9 days. Son of Christian and Maria Carlson, Mr. Carlson was born on a farm in the East Marion vicinity near Stratford. He received his education in the rural schools of that community and grew to young manhood there. He was married December 26, 1895 to Jennie B.Peterson and the Lord blessed this union with 4 sons and three daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Carlson were baptized and joined the Stanhope Christian Church in 1900. Realizing the need of the Gospel in the East Marion community, Mrs. Carlson conducted Sunday school and services in a little church on Sunday afternoons. They lived on the farm until 1925 when they retired and moved to Stratford. Mr. Carlson took an active part in the work of the Baptist church in Stratford. He taught the men’s class for several years. And was very capable because of his thorough knowledge of the Bible, the book beloved so much. He also took an interest in the activities of the local community and was on the town council at Stratford for several years. His sincere and friendly spirit brought him many friends. Mrs. Carlson died in 1941 and Mr. Carlson was preceded in death also by one son, Robert, who died at the age of 15 months and one sister Anna Carlson. He leaves to mourn, three sons and three daughters; Roy and Lester of Stratford, Glenn of Jewell. Mrs. Leonard Angstrom and Mrs. Floyd Young of Stratford and Mrs. Eugene Town of Webster City. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters; C. Carlson of Stratford, Theodore Carlson of Webster City, Mrs. W I Williams of Vinton, Mrs. W A Anderson of Stratford, and Mrs. G A Lundquist of Boone. Through the life of Mr. Carlson, many have learned to know the Lord and because of his earnest Christian life here on earth, his reward will be great in heaven. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Baptist church. The service was opened with a vocal duet by Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Kent of Jewell. Following this number the Rev. C.F. Schmidt of the Stanhope Christian Church led in devotion and said a few words. The obituary was then read and donations in Mr. Carlson’s memory were recognized. Another vocal duet was rendered after which the Rev. David Danielson brought the message. Mr. Carlson was laid to rest in the South Marion Cemetery. There was a very large crowd at the church and some had to be in the lower auditorium with the aid of the public-address system. Relatives from long distances attended the services. The relatives met at the Leonard Angstrom home preceding the service and returned afterwards for lunch that was prepared and served by the ladies from the Baptist Church.
