Read More	The Crofton Journal, NE, Thursday, January 21, 1932, pg. 1, col. 7 OBITUARY FRANK BUSCHELMAN Frank Buschelman Sr., living near Fordyce, passed away at his home at an early hour Wednesday morning of last week after a lingering illness due to the infirmities of old age. Born in the village of Steinfeldt, in Oldenburg, Germany, on Nov. 27, 1846, Mr. Buschelman's life has been one of great adventures, serving citizenship under three flags, sailing the seven seas, survivinng a shipwreck and pioneering in Cedar county. When he was twenty years old he was drafted in the army and left home to join the merchant marine. Serving as assistant steward on the ship he saw strange parts and lands and visited South America, ports on the mediterranean, in Africa as well as Europe, the East and West Indies and colonies in Holland. In 1869 he was in a shipwreck on the North sea near the English Cliffs during a severe storm, and as the ship floundered in the water the sending of life boats from the shore was impossible. The English coast guards shot ropes across to the doomed ship and the sailors fastened these to belts around their bodies and jumped into the raging waters. Mr. Buschelman often related that he was the second to last man to leave the ship and it sunk ten minutes later. Classed as a deserter, Mr. Buschelman could not return to Germany, so he went to Holland where a sister and brother were employed. A few months later in 1869 he secured a passport and sailed for America, the family following the next year. In 1873 the family came to Cedar county and homesteaded the land where the family now reside. On June 14, 1882, Mr. Buschelman was united in marriage to Miss Frances Kathol, at Bow Valley, with the Rev. Fr. Uhing officiating. During his lifetime Mr. Buschelman has assisted in the building of four churches in Cedar county, namely: Bow Valley, Menominee, St. Joseph's church at Constance and St. John's at Fordyce. Surviving Mr. Buschelman are his widow, four sons, Frank, August and Martin of Fordyce, and Anton of Menominee; three daughters, Mrs. Albin Becker and Mrs. Otto Asbre of Fordyce, and Mrs. Joseph P. Kuehn of Crofton, also one aged sister, Miss Mary Buschelman, who is past 77 years and who has always made her home with her brother and family. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, at St. John's church in Fordyce, Rev. Fr. End officiating. Pall bearers were four grandsons, Norbert and Armond Kuehn, Clarence and Harold Buschelman, one nephew, Alfred Buschelman of Crofton, and Irvin Buschelman, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Buschelman of Fordyce. The funeral was largely attended in spite of the falling snow and bad roads, and burial was made in the church cemetery at Fordyce. +++ The Hartington Herald, NE, Thursday, January 21, 1932, pg. 5, col. 1 OLD PIONEER DIES AT FORDYCE HOME Frank Buschelman, Sr., of Fordyce, Dies Wednesday Frank Buschelman, sr, 86 years old, an old pioneer resident of Cedar county, died at his home two miles west of Fordyce at four o'clock Wednesday morning. Death was caused from the infirmities of old age. Mr. Buschelman had been ailing for the past year. Frank Buschelman was born in the village of Steinfield, Oldenburg, Germany, in November, 86 years ago. His early life was very colorful as he followed the sailor's life with his brother, Anton. One of the interesting features of his life was when the two brothers were shipwrecked on the shore of England. A life line was shot out to the sinking boat and men were safely pulled to shore. Tiring of life on the sea, the brothers came to Holland and later immigrated to America in 1869. They were employed in railroad shops at Cincinnati, Ohio and Fort Wayne, Indiana. The rest of the Buschelman family came to American in 1871 and came west to Nebraska. The father homesteaded the farm on which Frank Buschelman had spent his entire life and where he died early Wednesday morning. Mr. Buschelman's life was a full one, devoting much time to charity and lending financial aid to the founding of various churches and schools of the county. He was well known for his kindness and his thoughtfulness of others. He was influential in community and political affairs, although he never held public office. He was a director of school district 26 for a number of years and a trustee of St. Joseph parish at the time the church originated. The nearest church in the early times was that of St. Helen and he was instrumental in the building of the Bow Valley, Constance and Fordyce churches. During his lifetime he acquired many farms which have been deeded to his sons, who reside near him. Mr. Buschelman married Frances Kathol at the old Bow Valley church with Father Uhing officiating. They had been married about 49 years. The original log home of the Buschelman family still stands and is used for a garage. The late Mr. Buchelman has been in failing health for a number of months and death had been expected by the members of the family. The survivors are his wife, Frances, and four sons, Frank, jr., of Fordyce, Anton of Menominee, Martin and Gus of near Fordyce, and three daughters, Mrs. Kuehn of Crofton, Mrs. Albin Becker of near Hartington and Mrs. Henry Asbra of Fordyce. One sister, Mary, is the only surviving member of the Buschelman family; his brother, Anton, died several years ago in Knox county. The sister has made her home with her brother, Frank, all her life. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 10 o'clock at the St. John's church at Fordyce with Father Victor End officiating. Interment was made in the Fordyce cemetery.
