"Frankie" Dunnick, 73, of Girard, Kan., well-known philanthropist, owner, and CEO of Exchange State Banks, died unexpectedly at 12 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2014 at his home. Mr. Dunnick was born August 15, 1941, the son of Frank and Oval (Kennedy) Dunnick, originally from McCune, Kan. He began working in the McCune State Bank in McCune and the First National Bank in Girard. He also worked at the Parsons Commercial Bank and the Moran State Bank. In 1989, he purchased the Exchange State Bank in St. Paul, Kan. then proceeded to purchase additional banks in Girard in 1996 and Columbus, Kan. in 1999. He was also owner and CEO of the Prescott State Bank in Prescott, Kansas. He was raised in McCune and graduated from McCune High School with the Class of 1959. He continued his close bond to the McCune Community until his death. He later graduated from Pittsburg State University, majoring in Finance. In 1991, he was chosen and appointed by then-Gov. Joan Finney as State Banking Commissioner for the State of Kansas, a position he held until mid-1995. Frank was very active in state and local politics and served on numerous boards and foundations throughout the area. Frank served as past president, current board member, and present Secretary-Treasurer of the Craw-Kan Telephone Cooperative in Girard for 32 years. He was only the second person to hold the position of secretary-treasurer in the company's history. He served as past president of the PSU Foundation for Pittsburg State University, and was a devoted alumni and supporter of Pittsburg State University. He was past president, a founding member and current director of the Community Foundation of Southeast Kansas. He was past president of the Big Brutus Board in West Mineral, Kan. He was a founder and board member of the Girard Area Community Foundation. He was a founder and board member of the St. John's Regional Foundation from 2005 to 2008. He served as a board member of the Osage Township Library in McCune; a recent addition to the library is dedicated to him as The Frank Dunnick Hall. He was an active member of the Girard United Methodist Church, serving in many capacities. He was a member of the Crestwood Country Club, the Kansas Bankers Association and the Girard Masonic Lodge. Music was his passion and he savored the moments when he was singing with his Holiday Band. Surivivors include his brother, Larry Dunnick and wife Diana of McCune, his beloved niece Caitlin Dunnick, his devoted pal "Pup" and a special friend, Wilda Pentola of Lake Farlington. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014 at the Girard United Methodist Church in Girard with the Rev. Dallas Peterson officiating. Burial will be at the McCune Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at the Bedene Funeral Home in Arma, Kan. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Girard United Methodist Church or the McCune Osage Township Library. Donations may be sent to or left at the Bedene Funeral Home, 517 E.
