Swanson, for many years a prominent business man and civic leader of Akron, and whose parents were among the pioneer settlers in Union county, S.D., passed away at his home here last Friday noon, December 5, 1941, following a severe heart attack the previous Sunday. He had been in failing health the past three or four years. He was 76 years, 1 month and 16 days of age. Mr. Swanson was born October 19, 1865, at Stockryd, Jonkoping Lan Smoland, Sweden. He came to the United States with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Swan Swanson, when he was six years old. His parents settled on a farm in Union county, S.D. where Mr. Swanson grew to man's estate and engaged in farming. In 1890 he was united in marriage with Miss Betsy Johnson. For about three years after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Swanson lived in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he conducted a shoe store. They again farmed in Union county for several years before coming to Akron about forty years ago. About the year 1900, when rural route four was started out of Akron, to the southeast, Mr. Swanson served as its carrier for a time. He afterward engaged in several business enterprises in Akron, first in the hardware and furniture business, later in the real estate business, and was one of the organizers and president of the First Trust & Savings bank, of Akron. At the time of his retirement four years ago he was operating a mortuary, having become a licensed mortician. Mr. Swanson served two-terms on the Akron town council, from 1918 to 1923, and in 1928 he was elected on the Republican, ticket to represent Plymouth County in the state legislature. He was the builder of the Akron Hospital. Mr. Swanson became a member of Freedom lodge, No. 434, A.F. & A.M., in 1906, and afterward filled several offices of the lodge, including that of worshipful master. He was also a member of the Sioux City Scottish Rite Consistory, holding the rank of K.C.C.H. Mr. Swanson's wife preceded him in death in 1937. He is survived by a brother, Victor, of Clark, S.D., and a sister Mrs. Tillie Anderson, of Elk Point, S.D. Harley C. Lewison is a foster-son. A man of fine character and integrity and possessed of a genial personality, he gained a wide acquaintance and friendship, holding the high esteem of all. He will be greatly missed in this community, in which he spent the major part of his useful life. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Immanuel Lutheran church, of which Mr. Swanson was a charter member and one of the organizers. Rev. E.G. Svenson conducted the service and paid a fine tribute to the deceased. A quartet, comprised of Miss Lula Claassen, Mr. and Mrs. Axel Johnson and Clifford Johnson, sang. The pallbearers were H. Shoulberg, S.W. Fredell, W.J. Davidson, Ernest Anderson, G. Emil Johnson and John Frisk. Akron business places closed during the funeral hour as a mark of respect. Interment was in Riverside cemetery. The Ross funeral home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
