DIETSCH FORDYCE, Neb. - Frank J. Dietsch, age 93 of Fordyce, Nebraska, died on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Hartington. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fordyce with the Rev. Michael Schmitz officiating. Burial will be at the St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Fordyce with military rites by the Hartington VFW Post #5283. Visitation will be on Friday from 1-5:00 p.m. with a rosary at 2:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. There will be a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Church in Fordyce. There will be no visitation at the church on Saturday morning. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Paul Dietsch, Benjamin Dietsch, Jonathan Kathol, Ted Kathol, Adam Dietsch, and Joseph Cady. Frank Joseph Dietsch was born on December 9, 1914 in O'Neill, Nebraska to Joseph and Cecilia (Hipp) Dietsch. Frank moved to Cedar County as a child and attended rural and Fordyce schools. He entered the U.S. Army on March 28, 1942 where he served in the Western Pacific Theater during WWII. Frank was involved in the Guadalcanal Campaign, the Northern Solomons Campaign, and the Luzon Campaign. Frank was awarded the Purple Heart and four Bronze Stars before his discharge on August 7, 1945. Frank married Gertrude Ann Becker on April 24, 1945 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fordyce. He and Gertrude lived in Fordyce where he went into partnership with Charles Thoene at Thoene-Dietsch Hardware Store in Fordyce, which later became Dietsch Hardware. In 1963 Frank was appointed Postmaster in Fordyce and retired from that position in December of 1987. Frank enjoyed his family, traveling, and woodworking. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Catholic Order of Foresters, the Hartington VFW Post #5283, the Disabled American Veterans, and the National Association of Postmasters of the United States since 1991. Frank is survived by his wife, Gertrude of Fordyce; seven children and spouses, Robert and Mary Lou Dietsch of Omaha, Daniel and Kathy Dietsch of Omaha, Jerene and Avon Vandewege of Lincoln, James and Lois Dietsch of Seward, Mary Kramer of Lincoln, Joan and Skip Cady of Minneapolis, Carole and Lyle Schulte of Fordyce; daughter-in-law, Winnie Dietsch of Shaker Heights, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Anna Dietsch of Yankton; 9 nieces and nephews. Preceding Frank in death were his parents, one son, Gary Dietsch, three grandchildren, Scott Dietsch, Allison and Marie Schulte; two sisters, Emma Backman, Mary Schroeder; one brother, Anton Dietsch.
