Howard has returned from Washington, where he went to bring home the body of the late Frank Poduska, and gives the acts regarding the terrible accident as told by persons who were eye witnesses. It apperars that Frank in company with several others, was assisting to test a water wheel from a raft in the middle of the Snake river. He had walked out to the edge of the raft to take the scale when a hook broke letting an arm fly around which struck him knocking him into the water. The water at this point was about twelve feet deep and very swift, and though there were friends within a few yards it was impossible for them to lend him any aid and he went down to his death in plain sight. The place where the accident happened is near the town of Two Rivers, about two miles above the mouth of Snake river where it runs into the Columbia river. From the time the accident occurred, Friday day afternoon at 2 o'clock, until the next Sunday night at 9 o'clock, a search was kept up for the body, which was found by two of Frank's friends from Walla Walla, who were coming up the river in a launch and it was only by accident that the body was discovered, it being in an upright position, just the top of the head being visible. The point of discovery was nearly seven miles from the scene of the accident and the body had been in the water forty-two hours. It was taken to Walla Walla, where it was embalmed and from which place Mr. Howard started on his homeward journey. Owing to the wreck on the railroad he was delayed eighteen hours but came through by the way of Omaha and Fort Dodge to Fonda, driving across the county and arriving home at about 11 a.m., Sunday. The funeral was a large one and was held at the Bohemian Catholic church, Sunday afternoon, Rev. A. Duda conducting the services. Frank J. Poduska was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Poduska, was born in Center township, Pocahontas county, Iowa, November 13, 1870, being 28 years, 8 months and 21 days old at the time of his sudden taking off. In 1895 he went to a Dixon, Illinois, college where he began a scientific and civil engineering course which he completed at Highland Park college in Des Moines. During the Spanish-American war he was a member of the government's signal corps and received an honorable discharge at the close of the war. In March, 1903, he went west where he taught school and worked at his profession of civil engineering, during this time going to Alaska with a party, but later returning to Washington where he was doing well having the brightest prospects before him. He laid out and surveyed the town of Two Rivers and owned a good lot in the town, surveying during the summer and teaching school during the winter. Frank Poduska was well liked by all who knew him of exemplary habits and always industrious, he leaves many friends who deplore his untimely death. Transcribed by Teresa Davis
