Sunday at Clutier, his home for the past five years, following a two weeks' illness of pleurisy and double pneumonia. Although he attained the ago of 75 years, Mr. Podhajsky enjoyed good health nearly all of his life, his fatal illness being the first serious one he had over known. He was stricken suddenly, and his life was despaired of almost from the start, although for a few days his condition seemed less serious and slight hope was entertained that he might recover. On Thursday of last week, it again became critical, however, and so continued until the end. He was conscious until within a few minutes of his death. A large crowd was present at the funeral service Tuesday morning at the Immaculate Conception church in Clutier. The Rev. Father T. A. Vopatek conducted the rites. Burial was in St. Vaclav cemetery, west of Clutier. Pall bearers, all nephews of the decedent, were Joe Pecenka and Frank, Joe, John, Louis and James G. Podhajsky. Mr. Podhajsky was born Oct. 10, 1854, in Bohemia. He came to America with his parents and two brothers when he was about I9 or 20 y ears old. The family settled almost immediately in Tama county, which was the decedent’s home throughout the remainder of his life. He was married June 10, 1880, to Mary Vondracek and the couple lived for a few years on a farm a short distance from what later became known as the Podhajsky homestead. Then they purchased 50 acres of land located six miles south of Traer, adding to this later another 100 acres. Ed Podhajsky occupies the place now. The decedent and his wife continued on this farm until they retired and moved to Clutier about five years ago. The celebration of their fiftieth wedding anniversary in June of this year was made the occasion for a gathering of relatives at their home. M r. Podhajsky was the last member of his family, his two brothers and one sister receding him in death as well as his parents. He was the father of seven children, six of whom survive. One son died in infancy. Those living are Frank L., Charles, James J., and Fred Podhajsky, Mrs. J. R. Novotny, and Edward Podhajsky, all of whom are residents of the Traer and Clutier communities. There are three grandchildren —Mrs. Wesley Sebetka and the Misses Mayme and Marian Podhajsky. The decedent became a member of the Modern Woodmen lodge, of Traer, thirty-one years ago, and continued that affiliation until his death.
