Private inurnment will be at Pioneer Cemetery on the west campus of Kansas University. Mr. Burge died Saturday, July 3, 2004, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community. He was born Sept. 28, 1921, in Lone Tree, Iowa, the son of Jay and Anna Rayner Burge. Mr. Burge was the director of the Kansas Union from 1952 until his retirement in 1983. The Burge Union was named for him after his retirement. Before moving to Lawrence he had served as the assistant director of the Iowa Memorial Union at the University of Iowa from 1946 to 1952. He was an Army veteran, serving in World War II in Germany, France and Belgium. He was a major in field artillery and retired from the Army Reserves in 1973 as a colonel. He was one of the youngest field grade officers in the Army's history. In 1970 he earned the Army's Legion of Merit Medal. Mr. Burge received his Bachelor of Science degree in commerce in 1942 from the University of Iowa. Mr. Burge was a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa, an honorary fraternity for scholarship and leadership. In 1951 he received the Outstanding Young Man award in Iowa City, Iowa. Because of his special bonds with KU students, he was designated as an honorary member of the classes of 1972, 1977, 1979 and 1980. He was awarded the first KU Employee of the Year award in 1975. In 1982 he was awarded the Fred Ellsworth Medallion, the KU Alumni Association's highest award for unique and significant service to the university. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and was a past president of the Noon Rotary Club. He served as a director of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, on the Governor's Committee on Civil Defense, as a Red Cross Mass Feeding chairman, and on the Committee of 100 with the city of Lawrence. He married Gladys Fredrick on Dec. 22, 1947, in Waverly, Iowa. She survives, of the home. Other survivors include a sister, Marge Young, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Monday, July 5, 2004 ljworld
