Read More	Frank Slatinka, 87, Is Claimed by Death After Brief Illness Aged Traer Man in Victim of Pneumonia Following a Slight Stroke Frank Slatinka, 87, a respected resident of Traer 56 years, died at 10 a.m. on New Year’s day after an illness of only a day. Mr. Slatinka had lived alone in east Traer in the home he had owned 42 years, since the death of his wife six years ago, and had been in reasonably good health of late. On Thursday night of last week when his daughter, Mrs. Charles Vanicek, went to see him he appeared to have a slight cold. She wanted him to spend the night at her home, but he assured her he was not sick and would be all right. Early next morning Mrs. Vanicek again went to her father’s home to see how he was getting along. The door was locked, and Mr. Slatinka was unable to come to the door to let her in. She called her husband, and they forced their way in, to find that Mr. Slatinka had suffered a slight stroke about 4 o’clock that morning. They removed him at once in an ambulance to the Vanicek home. Pneumonia developed, and Mr. Slatinka passed away peacefully the next morning. Funeral services were held Monday - a brief prayer service at the States Funeral Home at 9 a.m., and at 10 o’clock at St. Vaclav church in Carroll township. Casket bearers were Ed and Ludwig Seda, Frank and Fred Drahos, William Biley and Ed Kupka, the latter two of the Toledo vicinity. Burial was in St. Vaclav cemetery. Mr. Slatinka was born at Oujezd, Bohemia, Feb. 22, 1856, and was one of a family of five children. He was the only member of the family to come to America, and all of his brothers and sisters preceded him in death. Mr. Slatinka left his home for the United States in 1888, coming directly to Traer, where he worked on farms a short time, and also at a brickyard which at that time was located in southeast Traer near the present site of the city water tower. On Oct. 28, 1889, he married Anna Seda at Tama. The couple lived in Tama a short time, then returned to Traer. In 1894 Mr. Slatinka went back to Bohemia to visit his aged father, who was in poor health. It was his last visit to his native land. On the return trip the ship which brought him back to the United States carried another passenger who was to become a resident of Traer, and is yet living here - Mrs. John Hladik. Mr. Slatinka went to work for the Rock Island railroad as a section worker many years ago and was a faithful employee until an attack of rheumatism forced his retirement 18 or 20 years ago. He has received a pension from the railroad company ever since. Mr. Slatinka was often offered promotion as a foreman, but preferred to work as one of the hands, although several times he accepted temporary appointment as “boss” to help out. Not many citizens in the history of Traer earned a better reputation than Frank Slatinka for industry and thrift, honesty, and dependability. He lived simply and within his income, and often helped others. He was genial, polite and courteous. On the railroad for years he had the reputation of doing more work that he was paid for, and doing his job exceptionally well, and was proud of it. Mr. Slatinka was a devout member of the Catholic church. For many years he devoted some time every Sunday to the reading of the Bible in his home, and not many people were better posted on the Book of Books. Mr. and Mrs. Slatinka were the parents of five children. Mrs. Slatinka died here Nov. 18, 1936. A son, Frank Jr., was killed when struck by a train at the Rock Island coal chute in Traer Jan. 29, 1920. Two daughters also preceded the parents in death - Mrs. William Babinat in May, 1935, and Mrs. Joe Vojtech in August, 1936. The surviving children are Mrs. James Cech, of Grundy Center, and Mrs. Charles Vanicek, of Traer. There are eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
