Read More	LAST RITES HELD FOR ESSEX PIONEER Monday afternoon, February 7, 1938, marked the end of the earthly career of one of the pioneers of this community when in His infinite wisdom and love it pleased God to call from our midst Franz August Almquist, at the ripe old age of 89 years, 8 months, and 22 days. Mr. Almquist was born in Vrigstod, Smoland, Sweden, on May 15, 1848. He spent his youth in Sweden, and came to this country in 1869 celebrating his 21st birthday on the high seas enroute to his new home in America. On arrival he came west to Illinois where he located near Swedona. In 1873 he moved to Iowa and settled on a farm east of Essex, Iowa. In this community he remained, devoting his life to farming until 1929, when his family moved into Essex, Iowa, where he passed away in the midst of his immediate family. Mr. Almquist was united in marriage to Amanda Hendrickson, March 5, 1879. This union was blessed with nine children, of whom three preceded him in death. Surviving him are his wife, four sons, Carl, Elmer, Martin, and Ernest, all of this community, two daughters, Alice and Mrs. Edgar Anderson (Alda), of Stanton, Iowa; and one brother, Edward Peterson in Sweden, seventeen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. Almquist was an esteemed member of St. John's Church. Owing to ill health, he could not attend services with regularity during his last years. He passed through a spiritual crisis back in the early 80's which eventually resulted in his conversion to the Lord. His faith was simple, childlike, and beautiful. The patience with which he bore his suffering until the last was evidence of a heart made perfect by faith in His God. Peace to his memory. Funeral services were held on Wednesday afternoon at the home at 1:30 and 2 o'clock at the St. John's Lutheran Church and officiated by Rev. M. A. Johnson. ' Music was furnished at the home by Miss Gladd and at the church by a quintet composed by Mrs. S. A. Bergren, Mrs. M. E. Collins, Mrs. M. A. Johnson, John Hagglund, and Harley Bergren, also by Miss Gladd. At the committal service Miss Glad sand a Swedish Selection, THE BETTER LAND ARE HERE There's a bright land over yonder. Past the gleam of setting sun, Where the heart may rest in gladness, With its crown forever won. Oh, the rain of tears will never Fall across our path again For the midnight hour of sorrow Will have passed with all its pain. Then forever in His presence While the passing years unfold Lonely feet, long tired and weary Ever walk on streets of gold. Oh, the joy of endless service, Then to crown the victor's race! How the tearless eyes will glisten As they gaze upon His face! Serving as pallbearers were Frank Sar, Frank Miller, John Hagglund, Hugo Swanson, C. W. Parker, and A. D. Collins. Interment was at the Essex Cemetery. W. O. Carson, local mortician in charge. Those attending from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. Roosevelt Peterson, Carl, Oscar, and Elton Elge all from Aurora, Nebraska. Sister Lillie Jackson and Sister Emily Bengtson and Miss Ruth Gladd from the Immanuel Deaconess Institute of Omaha, Nebraska.
