Description	:	FRANZ ELMER ALMQUIST Franz Elmer Almquist was born on a farm southeast of Essex, Iowa on May 14, 1890. He was a son of Frank and Amanda Hendrickson Almquist. He was one of the family of nine children. Read More	FRANZ ELMER ALMQUIST Franz Elmer Almquist was born on a farm southeast of Essex, Iowa on May 14, 1890. He was a son of Frank and Amanda Hendrickson Almquist. He was one of the family of nine children. Elmer grew up on the farm where he was born and attended rural school On June 10, 1914, Elmer was united in marriage with Mabel Skalberg at the Fremont Covenant Parsonage. To this union two sons, Marvin and Merrill and four daughters, Myra, Vandelin, Leola, and Phyllis were born. Elmer and Mabel would have observed their sixty fifth wedding anniversary this coming June. At an early age Elmer was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church. Following his marriage he transferred his membership to the Evangelical Covenant Church in Essex where he was an active member the remainder of his life. Elmer lived and farmed on the farm where he was born until his retirement in 1963. Since that time he has resided in Shenandoah. In Shenandoah he became active in the Senior citizens Auctioneers where he made many new friends and derived much pleasure from the fellowship there. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, two sisters, and one son Merrill. He is survived by his wife, Mabel of Shenandoah, one son Marvin Almquist of Coin, Iowa, four daughters, Myra, Mrs. Had Livingston of Bedford, Iowa; Vandelin, Mrs. Harold Pearson of Stanton, Iowa; Mrs. Leola Morhain, and Phyllis, Mrs. Donald Fienup, both of Shenandoah, Iowa. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren, twenty four great-grand children, one great-great grandson, two brothers, Ernest Almquist of Essex, Iowa, Martin Almquist of Shenandoah, Iowa, and one sister, Miss Alice Almquist of Essex, Iowa, a number of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Elmer died Friday evening, March 30, 1979 at the Hand Community Hospital, Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 88 years. Services were held from the Evangelical Covenant Church, Essex, April 2, 1979 at 2 P. M. The words of comfort were by the Rev. Paul Westburg. A duet by Mrs. Charles Lang and Mrs. Robert Young was accompanied by Mrs. Sam Bengtson, Mrs. Robert Young was the organist. Honorary bearers were Charles Fienup, Donald Hascall, Martin W. Johnson, Reuben L. Lindburg, Frank Payne, Lloyd Peterson, and Elmer Strom. Casket bearers were Gary Almquist, David Anderson, Stephen Berning, Steven Fienup, Jerry Morhain, and Gerald Pearson. Interment was in the Essex Cemetery, Essex. Caring for the flowers were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Almquist and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Rydberg, Mrs. Dale Irvin and Mrs. Esther Johnson were in charge of the memory register. Ushers were Leland Ackerberg and Frederick Olson. Interment was at the Essex Cemetery.
