Description	:	Fred Augustus Cartwright, was born in Dade County, Missouri, May 19, 1875 and died in Villisca, December 4, 1895. Soon after his brith his parents moved to Iowa where they have since resided. He attended the country schools until thirteen years of age and then the Villisca School at Nodaway, for a short time. Soon after his brith his parents moved to Iowa where they have since resided. He attended the country schools until thirteen years of age and then the Villisca School at Nodaway, for a short time. He also attended the public schools of Corning, one year, when the family moved to Villisca and Fred entered High School here, from which he graduated in 1893, with credit to himself and his class. Being too young to obtain a certificate, he was given a special permit and began teaching at the Carlisle School. His success was such that he was retained two years, when he was elected principal of the West Side School of Villisca. His life as a student was full of kindness and love toward his schoolmates. The backward and discouraged student, knew that there was always one to whom he could go for help and encouragement. He was true to his teachers and his classmates. His great desire was to be of service to his fellow students. As a teacher he was faithful to the duties intrusted to him. He was a close observer of human nature and studied to know the best methods by high he might advance the interests of his pupils. Here, as everywhere kindness was his watchword. He firmly believed that the education of the heart should be made of equal importance with that of the mind, and to this end he daily labored. No teacher was ever more willing to assist those of the same profession than he. He early gave his heart to God and his consecration was not partial but was all in all. His one aim and purpose in life was to live God and man. He placed much stress on personal influence and we know that only God can know how much sunshine and joy he has brought into darkened hearts. He became a leader in religious circles and was elected first vice president of the local chapter of the Epworth League, for six months and afterward president fo two years. Under his leadership the Villisca League became one of the leading societies in southwestern Iowa. True to his convictions he was always found at his post of duty, untiring in his efforts to advance the cause of Christ among the young people, in which work he was abundantly rewarded. His favorite song, “When The Roll is Called I’ll be There” is surely true. When the effort to organize a Y.M.C.A. in Villisca was made, he put his shoulder to the wheel and assisted with his work, his money, and prayers. In his death, the Y.M.C.A. loses one of its strongest pillars. The funeral services were at the M. E. Church, Friday, December 6th. No larger assemblage ever gathered in Villisca to pay tribute to one of its citizens. The beautiful casket sat in front of the altar covered with roses presented by the teachers of the public schools. Just behind sat Alumni, To the left seated was the offering the Y.M.C.A. the broken wheel in flowers. A snow while pillow with the word “Fred” was presented by his classmates and an anchor by his Sabbath School Class. The services began by the choir singing, “Jesus Lover of My Soul” and after a touching prayer, Rev. Hohanshelt also read a scripture lesson and made some remarks after which Mrs. Hattie White Woodward spoke a few touching words in behalf to the alumni and the class of 1893 in particular. Prof Burton testifies as to his high character and faithfulness as a teacher, the S. S. Superintendent, F. F. Jones, spoke tellingly of the loss sustained by the Sabbath School in his head and E. G. Day added a tribute of high praise in the name of the Y.M.C.A. Rev. Hohanshelt then spoke most feelingly and earnestly of his church relations and the influence of his beautiful life. After a farewell characterized by much suppressed feeling, the earthly tabernacle so lately the abode of this brave young spirit, was conveyed to the cemetery at Nodaway, which had been selected as its final resting place. Short though his life was he accomplished more than many who life the full three score and ten. Transfigured now; no faith for him Who sees the risen Lord. The mortal vision may not dim The glory of his word. “Within the Vale,” no which, no tear, Amid the saints above; He knows no sorrow, pain, or fear, Where all is peach and love. The toilsome steps of time are passed, Crossed is death’s lurid stream, And All life’s dread perplexities Are a forgotten dream. No sad reflections folly’s fruit No dark sins to repent, But memories like a pleasant psalm Of a springtime nobly spent. Resolutions: Whereas In view of the loss sustained by the Teachers of the Villisca Schools, and by the Alumni of V.H.S. by the deceased of our friend and associate, Fred A. Cartwright and the the still heavier loss sustained by those who were nearest and dearest to him, therefore be it. Resolved the it is bur a just tribute to the memory of our friend that heartfelt testimony of our sympathy and sorrow be forwarded to the family of our departed friend.
