Schumacher is living retired in Denver after many years of close connection with farming interests of Maxfield township. He was born in this part of Bremer county in 1860 and is a son of Henry and Annie Schumacher, natives of Germany. The parents came to America in their younger days and settled in Bremer county, this state, in 1857. They made the journey from Illinois with ox teams and the father bought government land in Maxfield township, following farming until his death. Eight of the children born to their union grew to maturity, namely; Henry, a resident of Tripoli; Anna, the wife of August Buhr, of Waverly: F.J., of this review; Sophia, the wife of Herman Bockman, of Tripoli; Carl, of Waverly; Minnie, the deceased wife of Adolph Schroeder, who has also passed away; Lena, who married Henry Ganske, residing near Sumner; and Mary, the wife of Henry Platte, living on the old homestead in Maxfield township. F.J. Schumacher acquired his education in the public schools of Bremer county and when he was twenty-eight years of age took possession of his part of the homestead, comprising one hundred and sixty acres in Maxfield township. Upon this property he carried on general farming for many years, making it a productive and valuable farm and gaining recognition as one of the most progressive and practical agriculturists in this section of the county. In 1909 he turned over his land to his son and moved into Denver, where he has since lived retired. In 1888 Mr. Schumacher married Miss Anna Schroeder, a native of Bremer county and a daughter of Fred and Caroline Schroeder, both of whom were born in Germany and came to America in their early years. They settled first in Illinois and some years later removed to Bremer county, where their marriage occurred. The father purchased land in this locality and engaged in general farming here until his retirement. He now makes his home in Denver, having survived his wife, who passed away in 1894. To their union were born seven children: Henry, a resident of Waverly; Fred, of Bremer county; Anna, wife of the subject of this review; Herman, also of Bremer county; Louisa, of Denver, Iowa; and John and William, residents of Bremer county. Mr. and Mrs. Schumacher have a son, William, who was born in 1889. He married Miss Bertha Harms and they live upon the Schumacher homestead. Two children have been born to their union, Elmer and Esther. Mr. Schumacher has lived in Bremer county from his birth to the present time and has become widely and favorably known here, his upright and honorable life having gained him the esteem and confidence of all who have been associated with him.
