During the service Mrs. Fred Norskow sang "Nearer My God to Thee" with Mrs. Madge Stern as accompanist. Internment was in Evergreen cemetery, the pallbearers being J.H. Ritchie, Howard Giddings and Jerry Hundevard of Sabula; Thomas Brennan, Roy King and Earnest Graves of Savanna. The flowers were in charge of Mrs. H. Timmerman and Mrs. Howard Giddings. At the grave the impressive Odd Fellow burial service was carried out with Al Meyer, of Clinton, acting as chaplain. Fred M. Briggs, son of Charles and Elizabeth Oake Briggs, was born in Sabula, Iowa, Nov. 10, 1869. He attended the local schools and was first employed in the Sabula packing house for a few years. He then entered the employ of the C.M. & St. Paul railway company and was a faithful employee for over 45 years, most of the time as a fireman. He took advantage of the railway retirement act a number of years ago and continued his home in Sabula until a few months ago when Mr. and Mrs. Briggs moved to an apartment over the store of their son, Claude, in Savanna, as neither had been in good health. Wednesday evening, July 30th, as accompanied by his nephew, Fay Kempter, Mr. Briggs visited Sabula and after his return home was stricken with a heart attack and passed away without warning at 10:45 p.m. He had suffered from heart trouble for several years, but prior to his death had seemed to be considerably improved. Mr. Briggs was united in marriage to Effie L. Albright of this city on Sept. 14, 1893. Surviving are the widow and one son, Claude M. Briggs, prominent Savanna merchant; also a grand daughter, Joan Briggs of Savanna; a brother, Charles Briggs , of Clinton, and a sister, Mrs. Agnes Ball of Spokane, Wash., as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Archie; his parents, two sisters, Mayme Lynch and Alma Helm, and two bothers, Ed and Luther Briggs. Mr. Briggs served as a member of the Sabula school board and was a 50 year member of LaFayette lodge, no. 39, of this city, in which he took an active part. ____________________________________________________________ According to FHL Film Number 1255475, there was another un-named female child born to Fred M. and Effie (Albright) Briggs, born on 29 April, 1897, in Sabula, Iowa.
