Fred Koch, Jr. married Ida Fellows and they homesteaded a place in Hillside. They also inherited 40 acres from his parents. They had 13 children: Lizzie Rosenstraugh, Emma Higgins, Oscar, Vella Stacy, Stella Caughman, Harry, Freida Strainer, Callie Weeks, Jessie Bell, Bert, Beulah Houle, and Elton and Hattie who died in infancy. The family lived and worked on the Balman ranch. Fred served as water commissioner for years. Fred died at the age of 72 and Ida at age 90. Bert and Harry still live in Silver Cliff. Wet Mountain Tribune, Oct 13, 1933: Fred Koch Is Laid To Rest Saturday In Hillside Grave Not far from where he had spent most of his life and seen his family grow up, Fred Koch, widely-known Wet Mountain valley rancher and pioneer, was laid to rest Saturday. He was buried in the Hillside cemetery following funeral services at the Grange hall in Hillside which were conducted by the Rev. W. H. Sturtevant. Pallbearers were all close friends of Mr. Koch and who had known him for years. Mr. Koch, a native of Germany, came to this country in 1866 with his parents. He moved to the Wet Mountain valley in 1871 as a member of the German colony. He spent his childhood days in Hillside [Custer County] and Canon City [Fremont County]. On his 25th birthday, Aug. 29, 188[6], he was married to Miss Ida Belle Fellows. They took a ranch at Hillside and lived there for several years, later moving to Canon City. In 1900 Mr. Koch was made water commissioner for the Wet Mountain valley and held that position until his death. Surviving him are three brothers, Pete, Conrad and August, all of Hillside, his widow, and eight children. They are Mrs. John Stacy of Bend, Oregon; Mrs. Claude Bell of Victor, Teller, Colo.; Oscar Koch of Canon City, and Harry Koch, Bert Koch, Mrs. Callie Weeks and Mrs. Sheldon Houle, all of Hillside. Twenty-four grandchildren also survive him.
