As newlyweds, they milked cows and raised chickens and vegetables. He walked several miles each day to work in a saw mill. Their children were William, Louis, Fred, Lucy, Lena, Mollie, Anna, Hattie and Helmuth and John who were twins. Peter's father owned a grocery store in Silver Cliff, so young Peter drove a freight wagon from Silver Cliff to Canon City to pick up supplies. He also worked with a threshing machine crew and did custom work as well as operating a farm. They acquired several ranch holdings in the Hillside area. William, now 91 years old and living in Westcliffe by himself, tells a story about his father. While driving a team from Hillside to Westcliffe to deliver milk and cream, he went to sleep. He had too much to drink. The team pulled into a ranch now owned by the Campers. Unfortunately, the team pulled the wagon to close to a caved-in cellar, and upset wagon, cans and all, into the cellar. William also tells of the grasshopper plague in Canon City that completely leveled a 40 acre crop of wheat in one night. Helmuth and Esther Koch now live in Canon City. Anna lives in California. Charles, Louis' son, resides in the valley; Raymond lives in Canon City. Ralph Koch and Willa Buzzi, Helmuth's children, still live in the valley and John lives in Canon City. 100 Years Ago - 1907 Westcliffe Newspaper 2007 Tickets for the Fourth of July Ball, to take place in Westcliffe on the evening of the Fourth, are now on sale. There is to be a dance at the Pete Koch grove, near Hillside, on the evening of the Fourth. Wet Mountain Tribune, February 14, 1941--Services for Pioneer Resident of County Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Community Church for Peter Koch, 81, pioneer Custer and Fremont county resident, who died at his home near Hillside last Saturday after a prolonged illness. Mr. Koch had been in poor health for the past year. Born in Germany March 17, 1859, he came to this country with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederic[k] Koch, when he was but a year old. The family lived in Chicago until 1870, when they moved to Canon City with the [German] colony, remaining there for a number of years before moving to Hillside, where they engaged in farming and ranching. Mr. Koch was married to Miss Lena Knuth on August 14, 1881, and to this union were born five sons and five daughters. The family resided at Hillside until 1912, when they moved to Canon City, remaining there until 1925, when they returned to the ranch at Hillside. Besides his wife, five daughters, Mrs. Lucie [Lucy] Shea of Ormiston, Sask., Canada; Mrs. Lena Evans and Mrs. Hattie Wilson of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Mollie Berry and Mrs. Anna Caughman of Hillside; and four sons, Louis Koch of Westcliffe, and William, Fred and Helmuth Koch of Hillside, survive him [all now deceased]. One son, John, preceded his father in death some 38 years ago. Twenty grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren also survive, as well as a host of friends. Obsequies were conducted by Rev. Geo. W. Ellis, with the Menzel Funeral Home in charge. Interment was in Ula cemetery.
