He was born June 13, 1921, in Big Timber to John and Gertrude McCauley. Herb was a star basketball and football player for the Sheepherders. Read More	Big Timber Pioneer, March 15, 2002 Herb McCauley, 80, of Big Timber passed away quietly at the Pioneer Medical Center on March 6, 2002. He was born June 13, 1921, in Big Timber to John and Gertrude McCauley. Herb was a star basketball and football player for the Sheepherders. After graduating in 1939 he played semi-pro basketball for the Stockmen Bar in Billings. Herb enlisted in the U. S. Marines during World War 11 and fought in the Pacific theater. In 1946 he married Kathryn "Jean" Wagner. He worked at and later was co-owner of Solberg's Clothing Store until he retired in 1983. Herb enjoyed hunting fishing, camping, going to the cabin, bowling, playing cards, and pool, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed running the down box for any Sheepherder football games, as well as attending their basketball games. He was a member of the American Legion for 55 years and a Big Timber Volunteer Fireman for many years and had been active in Jaycees. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; his daughter, Janice; his parents; and his brothers; Henry, Bill, and John. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Dan and Cheryl McCauley of Helena; his daughter, Collen Smith of Billings; his grandsons, Quinn of Helena and Daniel and Kelton of Billings; his granddaughter, Katy of Helena; numerous nieces and nephews; and his many friends. We will miss him. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 11 at Lowry Funeral Home in Big Timber. Graveside committal followed in Mountain View Cemetery. Lowry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, Herb wished-for memorials to be made to the Little Herder football or the baseball program.
