Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Bertha Barteldes, two daughters, Mrs. D. I. Maggard, Wichita, and Mrs. Owen Carl, Lawrence and three sons, F. T. and Otto Barteldes, Lawrence, and A. G. Barteldes, Denver, Colorado. In 1875 Mr. Barteldes established the company in this city. For a period of at least forty years F. W. Barteldes was one of the best known citizens of Lawrence. Familiarly known to his friends as "Bart", he was a type in himself. He loved a joke, and delighted in putting one over on his friends. Bluff to an extreme degree, he had a warm heart, and those who knew him best were his warmest friends. Building on what had been started by an uncle, he developed the Kansas Seed House into one of the biggest concerns in the central west, dealing in seeds and garden supplies. At the height of prosperity he had branch houses both in Denver and at Oklahoma City. He loved the German idea of athletics and had a great part in the building of the Lawrence Athletic Association club house, now the Elks club, and was the "life of the party" on many well remembered occasions. His birthday parties came often, but he failed to acknowledge the supremacy of old age until the weight of years overcame him. He enjoyed bowling and kept it up for many years. He was a member of the Elks club. During the past few years, bent with rheumatism, his cheerful disposition did not fail him, and he always had a few minutes to chat with a friend. His sons, Otto and Friedo, have been trained in the business for years, as has also Max Wilhelmi, Jr., whose father was long identified with the business, so it is probable that the business will continue without any interruption, until another generation of boys grow up to take their father's places.
