Royden were indeed shocked when they learned that he had suddenly passed away at the John McDonald hospital in Monticello, Friday evening January 11. He had been taken ill with septicemia three days before, and his condition was so serious that his son and daughter-in-law felt it imperative to take him to the hospital for the best of care. For two days he seemed to rally, but his strength failed him Friday and the virulency of the disease caused a rapid decline. Mr. Royden was a man who was held in high esteem by a host of friends. He had done much for Monticello as well as the community in which he lived. He took an interest in people, and as a result his friends were numbered by his acquaintances. For many years he assisted his son, Frank, in helping the Monticello municipal band going. He also took a decided interest in church work, and organized a successful Bible class in the First Congregational Church of Monticello. He was devoted to his family and took tender care of his wife during several periods of illness. He was a great favorite of his two granddaughters, and the numerous good times they had together will of necessity have to be memories. Frederick Walter Royden was born in Rockton, IL on October 11, 1861. He removed from that town to Edgewood in 1884, where he made his home with his sister, and learned telegraphy. After serving the usual apprenticeship as "extra man" with the C. M. and St. Paul railroad he was appointed station agent at Scotch Grove. He later moved to Greeley, where he remained for nine years. He had always been interested in pharmacy and chemistry and while living at Greeley prepared himself to pass the state pharmacy examinations. In 1898, he purchased a drug store at Edgewood, and the family home was made in that town for ten years. After short residences in Rolla, Missouri and Lynnville, Iowa, Mr. Royden returned to Scotch Grove, in 1912, where he purchased the Hoyt nursery, which had been founded by Edward Hoyt in 1871. The name was changed to Scotch Grove Nursery and Mr. Royden operated it efficiently with the assistance of his son, Frank. The marriage of Mr. Royden to Lois Applegate occurred in 1888. Mrs. Royden preceded him in death less than a year ago. Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Royden, Jean, who died in infancy and Frank, who with his wife, and two daughters, survives Mr. Royden. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the family home in Scotch Grove. They were in charge of Rev. S. G. Gutsohn, pastor of the Congregational Church in Monticello and burial was made in Oakwood Cemetery.
