Fred grew up in Essex, where he graduated from high school. Following his schooling he was engaged in farming northwest of Essex until his retiring in 1987. Baptized and confirmed at Evangelical Covenant Church of Essex. Fred was currently a member of Faith Covenant Church of Essex. On September 18, 1946 he was united in marriage to Betty Henderson and to this union five children were born; Darwin, Tom, Deloris, Bob and Sharon. Preceding Fred in death was his wife Betty; daughter Deloris; parents; three sisters, Ruth, Elizabeth, and Edith; step children, Allan and Jan Bellew and a step grandchild. On January 6, 1996 Fred was united in marriage to Carol MacDonald currently living in Shenandoah, Iowa. Survivors include his wife Carol; four children, Darwin Olson and wife Nancy of Augusta, Kansas, Tom Olson and wife Jennifer of Shenandoah, Iowa, Bob Olson and wife Susan of Essex, Iowa, and Sharon Buckminster and husband Kim of Falls City, Nebraska; 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Step children, Jerold MacDonald and wife Beverly of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Bill MacDonald and wife Joan of Charoltte, Iowa, Cheryl MacDonald of Shenandoah, Iowa; brother, Donald Olson of Rohnert, California; sisters, Hilfred Bonnette of Swow, Ohio, Virginia Andersen of Villisca, Iowa; brother-in-law, Wayne Gray of Cheyenne, Wyoming; sister-in-law, Beverly Hubbs and husband Tom of Pueblo, Colorado; sister-in-law Margaret Henderson of Manhattan, Kansas; step grandchildren, great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Friday, December 2, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. at the Faith Evangelical Covenant Church in Essex. Words of comfort were given by the Rev. Jim Ressegieu. The eulogy was given by Darwin Olson. Organist was Marice Young. Vocalist was Karla Buckminster, who sang "Amazing Grace" and "In The Garden". The congregation sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". Attending the memory register were Elaine Lindburg and Crystal Sandahl. Caring for the flowers were Mr. & Mrs. Wallace Johnson and Mr. & Mrs. Tony Johnson. Casket bearers were Kevin Olson, Jeff Olson, Mike Olson, John Olson, Grant Olson, Chris Olson and Joe Buckminster. Ushers were Leland Ackerberg and Alan Erickson. Interment was in the Essex Cemetery. The Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home of Shenandoah was in charge of the arrangements.
