Description	:	Friedrich Wilhelm was known as William F. Greimann in the USA. He was the first generation of this family in the United States. They emigrated to America about six years after they were married, in 1854. William was a large, roughly built man, rather quiet and of very religious nature. They emigrated to America about six years after they were married, in 1854. William was a large, roughly built man, rather quiet and of very religious nature. Ann was short and heavy set, and quite talkative. They had three small children at the time they emigrated: Mary, William and Fred. The first winter in America, William split rails for the Yankees. When the weather was bad he made baskets of willow and hickory twigs. For baskets he received potatoes for pay. He also made wooden shoes and other articles. That summer he began to work on a farm for wages. After about a year he was able to rent a farm on shares. The landlord furnished the oxen and a few odd pieces of machinery. He did this for about four years. About 1860 or 61, William bought 40 acres of timber land. He continued to rent 80 acres and grubbed and hewed on his own land until he had it cleared and had built a log cabin on it. He gradually bought additional land from time to time until he owned 491 acres in Volga Twp., Clayton Co., IA (section 3 according to a 1888 map) William became a citizen on Jan. 27, 1863. He was a hard working man of strong build. He never went into debt and only bought something when he had cash to pay for it. Both of the couple were god fearing people and put their faith and trust in the Lord. William was the priest of the household, he read the bible and worshiped with his family daily. Sending their children to religious school came first, public school came second. In 1858, William helped to build (and was a charter member of) a stone church which is located in Ceres, about five miles south of Garnavillo on Hwy. #52. It is now on the National Register of Historical Sites in the state of IA. --- Marvel Griffen Wagner --------------------------------------------- Friedrich was the son of Claus Heinrich Christian (1761-1817) & Catharina Anna Marie Engel Klute Greimann (1780-1840)-Natives of Germany He and Anna came to the USA on Oct. 20 1854 -Ship-Aguste to New Orleans. While in the Gulf of Mexico the boat struck a sandbar and broke in the middle. The front and rear part went down, and the middle not, so the people go off safe and sound another boat was nearby and picked them up. After they landed at New Orleans. They boarded a steamship and went up the Mississippi to Guttenberg, IA in November 1854. They settled in Clayton County.
