Birum were held Sunday afternoon at the Champion Funeral Home with the Rev. Ross B. Hartman in charge. Masonic rites were conducted by Osage Lodge No. 102, A.F. & A.M. with members of Knights Templar lodge present. Mr. Birum, 69, died Friday evening at the home of Mrs. Birum's daughter, Mrs. Jack Limbert, at Waterloo, about an hour after he had suffered a severe heart attack. Mr. and Mrs. Birum were on their way to Florida where they had planned to spend the winter, He had suffered from heart disease for a number of years. George Albert, second child of Albert and Carrie Birum, was born January 23, 1878, in Baraboo, Wisconsin. He spent his early life in the area near Sioux Falls, S.D. He was married to Cora Stephens of Waverly, Iowa, October 6, 1897. To them were born three children: Gladys Irene (Mrs. Jerry Elman) of Osage; Ellen Edythe (Mrs. Frederick J. Olson) of Mason City; and Stephen George of Albert City. Mr. and Mrs. Birum made their home on a farm near Waverly for a number of years and in 1907 they moved to Osage, where he went into business with his father and brother. In 1910 he took the agency for Buick automobiles and later acquired garages in Stacyville, Charles City, and Mason City. The garages at Osage and Mason City were later sold to his two sons-in-law. Mr. Birum was a director of the Farmer's National Bank and served on the city council for 12 years. He was chief clerk of the ration board during World War II. He was a member of the Osage Masonic Lodge, a shriner, and belonged to the Methodist Church. Mrs. Birum died November 12, 1939. Mr. Birum was married to Mrs. Mabel Brown of Waterloo November 18, 1940. They made their home in Osage and spent their winters in Florida. Surviving are his wife; three children; a brother, Fred of Osage and five grandchildren.Preceding him in death were a brother, Vern, and a sister, Edna. Mitchell County Press Volume 82, No. 46
