On the evening of October 30th, 1900, George Atkinson was struck by lightning and instantly killed at his home six and one half miles northwest of Emporia, Kansas. George Atkinson was born in Durham county, England, July 14th, 1850, and came with his parents to America in 1855 and resided in Mason county, West Va., till 1860. He then moved to Meigs county, Ohio, and to Lyon county, Kansas, in 1868. He was married Nov. 11th, 1875, to Miss Louisa Slisher (sic). Nine children were born to them; one died in infancy. His wife, four sons and four daughters, two brothers, two sisters are left to mourn his death. The brothers are Samuel Atkinson and E.M. Atkinson; the sisters are Mrs. Robert Hardy, Mrs. James Beach, all living here. The news came as a shock to his many friends in this city. Mr. Atkinson was one of Lyon county's best known and highly respected farmers; he was a man of sterling worth and respected by all who knew him. He was buried in Maplewood cemetery Nov. 1st, 1900, a very large number of sorrowing friends and neighbors followed his remains to their last resting place. The Rev. Madison, of the First M.E. church, conducted the services. Dearest brother, thou hast left us, Here thy loss we deeply feel, But 'tis God that hath bereft us, He can all our sorrows heal. Yet again, we hope to meet thee When the day of life is fled, Then in heaven, with joy to greet thee, Where no farewell tears are shed.
