STONER PASSES AWAY Funeral Services Will Be Held On Thursday Afternoon At Rounsevell's George D. Stoner, Homestake pensioner, and one of the well-known old time residents of Lead, died suddenly at the Homestake hospital yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock. He had been in failing health the past few years and was brought to the hospital from his home in Spearfish Sunday evening. The deceased was born at Mifflintown, Juanita county, Pa., on August 3, 1859, and grew to manhood there. He came west to Walnut, Ill., at the age of 20 years and there was married in 1884 to Susie Mapes. Following their marriage they settled at Carson, Ia. and after living there three years, went to Blue Springs, Neb. Eight years were spent there and Mr. Stone came to Lead in 1896 and entered the employ of the Homestake Mining company. Mrs. Stoner and the children came the following year and the family remained here until Mr. Stoner was pensioned in 1930 because of ill health. The two winters following he and Mrs. Stoner went to California, another year in Detroit, Mich., and the last two years they have lived in Spearfish. Ten children were born to this union, seven of whom are living. They are: Ray, of Lead; J. William Stoner, Salt Lake City, Utah; Mrs. Georgia Hackett, Lead; Archer, of Aruba, Dutch West Indies, Mrs. Fred White, Whitesboro, N.Y.; Cecil and Herman, Lead, and Kurtz Stoner of Beatrice, Neb.; two sisters residing in Pennsylvania; 20 grandchildren and a number of nephews and nieces. Mr. and Mrs. Stone celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a family dinner at the Highland hotel December 18, last year, and on August 3 of this year, a family gathering at Spearfish park attended by all the living relatives in Lead was enjoyed in honor of Mr. Stoner's 76th birthday anniversary. The deceased was a member of the Lead Baptist church and funeral services will be conducted from the Rounsevell chapel by the Rev. Dan J. Rueb Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Interment will be in municipal cemetery in South Lead in the family lot by the graves of the deceased's three sons, Howard, Guy and Bernard. J. William Stoner arrived last evening from his home in Salt Lake City, several hours after his father's death. The other children living at a distance will be unable to come here for the funeral. Stoner, well known old timer of this section of the Hills, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Rounsevell funeral chapel. The Rev. Dan J. Rueb, pastor of the First Baptist church, will preach the service. Interment is to be made in the family lot in the Municipal cemetery in South Lead, beside the graves of three deceased sons. Mr. Stoner is a brother of T.R. Stoner, Lead city commissioner, whose name was unintentionally omitted in the list of Mr. Stoner's surviving relatives. Kurtz Stoner, of Beatrice, Neb., is also a brother of the deceased. Lead Daily Call, Friday, August 23, 1935, page 1: Stoner Services Held Thursday A gathering of old time friends at the Rounsevell funeral chapel yesterday at 3 o'clock, marked the funeral services for the late George D. Stoner, long time Lead resident, whose demise occurred at the Homestake hospital Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock. There were some beautiful bouquets of flowers. The Rev. Dan J. Rueb of the Baptist church was in charge of the rites, and sang a sacred solo by request. The other music was furnished by the Baptist choir, with Mrs. Hazel Langford at the piano. Burial was in the family lot in the Municipal cemetery. Four sons and two grandsons of the deceased were the pall bearers.
