Lead Daily Call, Thursday, August 20, 1914, page 8: The condition of Guy Stone, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Stoner of Addie street, was such last evening as to cause the greatest alarm in his family. His brother, J. William Stoner, is twelve miles out of Hill City, and yesterday could not procure conveyance in time to catch the train in, but he is expected to arrive on the Burlington this afternoon. Another brother in Omaha has been notified of the seriousness of Guy’s condition and will probably arriver here within a day. The many friends of this splendid young man, just blooming into young manhood, will hope for the immediate change for the better in his case. Lead Daily Call, Friday, August 21, 1914, page 5: GUY DARWIN STONER Last night at 6:15,just as the sun was sinking from sight in the west, the life of Guy Darwin Stone, son of Mr. and Mrs. George D. Stoner, took its flight to the unknown world and the eyes that had always been so full of light and cheer for his friends, associates and dear ones were closed in death. Guy Stone was born at Blue Springs, Nebraska, July 30, 1897, and was therefore at the time of his death seventeen years and twenty-one days of age. Always of a robust healthy constitution, he was the last one that seemed likely to be called, but pneumonia in a week’s time accomplished his demise, and the home which had always been happy by his optimism and cheer was plunged in sadness and gloom. On Thursday a week ago Guy complained of feeling badly and on Friday morning was unable to go to his work at the Cowling bakery, where he had been engaged all summer. A physician was summoned who announced the patient suffering with a bad case of pneumonia. It as first thought that owing to his splendid constitution he would be able to rally from the illness, but this he was unable to do. He made a valiant fight for his life and seemed to put all his energy in a determination to conquer the disease but his heart action became impaired, as is frequently the case in this disease, and finally he had to succumb to its ravages. Guy was a likeable boy, full of life and good spirits ever ready to assist anyone in trouble or to do a favor. He was a general favorite among his associates, a boy who made friends readily and one the longer he was known the better he was liked. He was a member of the militia company of this city and was one of those who went to Sparta with other members of the company in July. He possessed all of the qualifications of a good soldier, being obedient to higher authority and painstaking in all the duties devolving upon a member of the militia. There are besides his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. George D. Stoner, six brothers and two sisters to mourn for him. The brothers are Ray, Will, Bernard, Cecil and Herman of this city and Archer of Lincoln, Neb. The latter reached here yesterday, but Guy’s mind was clouded and he did not recognize the brother who in his delirium, he had frequently called for by name. The two sisters are Misses Georgie and Lucy, both of whom were at home when the end came. Complete arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made, but it will probably take place Sunday afternoon from the home, 15 McClellan street. Rev. Hayes, chaplain of the company of which Guy was a member, will probably officiate. The death of Guy Stoner in the bloom of his splendid young manhood has cast a gloom over the entire city, and the sympathy y of everyone goes out to the afflicted family in their hour of sorrow. He was a good son and brother, a boy of whom his parents were proud, because of his many manly attributes. His loss will be keenly felt in the home and among those who knew him best. Hayes will officiate. Lead Daily Call, Monday, August 24, 1914, page 4: FUNERAL OF GUY STONER The funeral of the late Guy Stoner was held from the residence of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George D. Stoner, at 15 McClellan street yesterday morning at 10:30. Rev. Hayes, pastor of the Presbyterian church, and chaplain of Company C of the National Guards, the latter of which Guy was a member, conducted the services. Rev. Hayes spoke very beautifully on the subject of “Young Manhood,” and paid a splendid tribute to the one whose memory they were honoring. His address was an inspiration to the living, and especially so to his young friends and associates, as well as a consolation to the members of the afflicted family. The high standing in which deceased was held in life was fully attested by the beautiful floral tributes which banked the casket. There were many designs, all expressive in a mute way of the love and esteem of the many who were anxious to show some measure of appreciation for the life of the young man. Twenty-four men and three officers of Company C., attended the funeral and accompanied the body to its last resting place. At the grave after a hymn and a prayer, the firing squad fired three salutes and the bugler sounded taps. The acting pall bearers were the six brothers of the deceased. A quartet from the Baptist choir rendered the singing. The services throughout were very impressive and fitting and the large attendance signified the general sorrow that was felt in the death of one of the most promising of Lead’s young men.
