He was born May 15, 1917 in Johnson County, Iowa, near Wellman, Iowa, the son of Noah G. and Emma (Showalter) Yoder. George was baptized in the West Union Mennonite Church and was along time member of the United Methodist Church. He attended Hickory Grove Rural School and Center High School. Read More	George Gabriel Yoder (89) of Greeley, CO., died Thursday, April 5, 2007, at Life Care of Greeley. He was born May 15, 1917 in Johnson County, Iowa, near Wellman, Iowa, the son of Noah G. and Emma (Showalter) Yoder. George was baptized in the West Union Mennonite Church and was along time member of the United Methodist Church. He attended Hickory Grove Rural School and Center High School. He also took a course in Construction Management form Chicago Technical College. He worked as a carpenters apprentice in the rural Wellman area and as a carpenter in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in the mid 1930's. In 1938 he went to California where he was employed as a carpenter, carpenter Forman, and as a construction superintendent on Camp White in Medford, Oregon. In 1942 he enlisted in the US Navy Seabees where he served as a Chief Carpenters Mate at Pearl Harbor and other areas of the South Pacific, earning two Bronze Stars for the Gilbert and Marshall Island Campaigns. After two and one-half years he returned to the states. Upon returning, on March 29, 1945 he married Audrey Myrtle Hicks in Reno, NV. Soon after that he was sent to Guam for six months and was discharged on November 6, 1945. After World War II George and Audrey returned to Wellman, where he formed his own construction company for several years, during which time he founded the Wellman Ready-Mix Company. After leaving Wellman he joined W. A. Zlogar Construction Company in Ottumwa, Iowa. In 1959 he joined Universal Construction Company of Kansas City, KS. as Vice President. In 1970 he joined Hensel Phelps Construction Company, Greeley, CO., as project manager in charge of the Eastman Kodak film manufacturing plant in Windsor, CO. He was also project manager of the second building and drainage facility for the Hewlett Packard Computer and Electronics Plant in Fort Collins, CO and the Burlington Northern Locomotive Maintenance and Repair Facility in Alliance, NE. He retried in 1980 after 46 years in the construction industry. He was a member of the Lions International Club for many years, a Melven Jones Fellow, and a Charter Member of the Wellman Lions Club in 1947. He was also a long time member of the Elks Lodge (BPOE) and Sons of the American Revolution. He was president of the Southeastern Iowa Engineering Club and on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Engineering Society. He is survived by his daughter, Betty Kitchen of Greeley, CO, his daughter-in-law, Kristen Yoder of Denver, CO, his grandsons, Brent Paul Yoder and Gregory David Yoder, both of Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Audrey, his parents, a sister, Florence Rensberger Kramer, and his son, Dwight David Yoder.
