Jenks Leaves With The Old Year Death, always unwelcome, took toll of the last "Old Soldier' in Lake City Friday, the first day of the New Year, 1937, when the spirit of George Jenks slipped away from this earth to join the ranks of those who had already entered the Undiscovered Country. George Jenks, son of Ark and Susannah (Spaulding) Jenks, was born in Crawford county, Pennsylvania, February 22, 1841. When a young man he moved with his parents to Benton county, Iowa, and it was there that he was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Brody, October 10, 1866. They lived on a farm in Benton county until 1876, then came to Calhoun county where, with the exception of a short period, the home has since been made. Mr. and Mrs. Jenks were blessed with a family of eleven children, ten of whom survive their father. Fred preceded him in death. The living children are: Robert, of Lonely Lake, Canada; Laura and Mrs. T. A. Mood, of Lake City; Edwin of Lavinia; Mrs. Rose Brownell of Los Angeles; James of Brookingss, So. Dak.; George Jr., of Faith, So. Dak.; Grover of Twin Falls, Idaho; William of Lansing, Mich.; Mrs. Frances Williams of Sioux City. There are also 41 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. D. L. Brownlee, of Wallace, Neb. Mrs. Jenks died May 27, 1930. When Mr. Jenks was 21 years old, in August, 1862, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He drilled two months at Iowa City, when he was called home by his mother, who needed his assistance, as his father and two brothers were also in the army. He obtained a furlough and went home where he became afflicted with the measles. He was "struck off" the muster roll at Iowa City, but in the fall of 1863 he again enlisted and went down the river from Davenport to New Orleans. There he joined the Iowa City regiment again. His brother, Jonathan, was principal musician in this regiment, his father was in a Missouri regiment, and another brother, Edwin, was a member of the 5th Iowa regiment. Mr. Jenks enlisted as a private soldier, but his musical ability soon made for him a place in the band, but his other duties were numerous. He was under the command of such generals as Banks, Phil Sheridan and Sherman. He fought in the battle of Winchester and was sent to reinforce Sherman's army in its march to the sea. It is said that his regiment under General Emery saved the city of Washington D. C. While there, they marched through the streets and past the White House where the band played several numbers. A large crowd was on the White House veranda and Mr. Jenks heard that President Lincoln was among them. He served his county well and received honorable discharge August 31, 1865. Mr. Jenks was a public-spirited man and in the earlier days gave his service to the county in numerous ways. His home was one of hospitality and as the years passed many were the friends who dropped in to "pass the time of day" with him and for these friends he always had a cheery word and happy smile. He possessed a keen mind, which was alert, even as he approached the century milestone, and his memory of historic dates was unusual even for a younger man. He was as long as the organization existed a member of Lander Post, No 156, Grand Army of the Republic, Lake City Ia., and upon his disbandment was made a comrade at large of the GAR. He also held membership in Tri County Post, No. 1899, V F W. His associations with these organizations gave him much comfort and up to the time of his last illness he was never so happy as when reminiscing upon military reflects. Mr. Jenks would have been 96 years old next Feb 22.
