He visited the grave sites of every U.S. president. He photographed every county courthouse in Nebraska and all the one-room schoolhouses still standing in Cass County. Miller, of Plattsmouth, Neb., died Sunday after battling health problems for a few months. He was 84. Miller grew up in a newspaper family. His family had operated the Papillion Times since 1903. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1948. He was a sportswriter at the Lincoln Star before joining The World-Herald as a general assignment reporter. In 1949, his father, also named George, died of a heart attack. Miller left the Omaha paper and took over as editor and publisher in Papillion. The Papillion Times Printing Co. at that time also owned the Gretna Breeze and the Springfield Monitor. The job involved long hours. "He did everything," said his son, George Miller, a copy editor at The World-Herald. "You write editorials. You go cover all the meetings. You sell ads. You're there the Wednesday nights when they're printing the paper." He also covered football and basketball. Part of the elder Miller's duties was to cover the Papillion school board. When a vacancy opened on the board in the mid-1950s, his son said, the board appointed him to fill the spot, because he was always at the meetings anyway. In a 1963 article in The World-Herald, Miller said that as a former board member, "I think now I'm in a better-informed position to advise the board through my editorials." In 1980, Suburban Newspapers Inc., a subsidiary of The World-Herald, purchased the Miller family's newspaper group, which, in addition to the weekly Papillion, Gretna and Springfield papers, included the weekly Ralston Recorder and the Millard Edition of the Recorder, plus two free circulation papers. The Millers previously also had owned the Louisville (Neb.) Courier and the Bellevue Press. In February 1983, Miller purchased the Plattsmouth Journal and the Weeping Water Republican. Four months later, he bought the Louisville Messenger. The Plattsmouth paper was published twice a week at the time; the other two were weekly papers. In October of that year, Miller sold controlling interest in the papers to the Journal-Star Printing Co. of Lincoln. He continued as publisher and president of the Journal until 1991. "George was the perfect definition of a journalist," said Allen Beermann, executive director of the Nebraska Press Association. "He was careful, considerate, thorough, fair. He always made sure that he understood the situation or the story." The association named Miller a master editor/publisher in 1983. He had served as association president in 1977. Miller was inducted into the Nebraska Journalism Hall of Fame in 2007. Miller served as the president of the Cass County Historical Society from 1989 to 2009. He also served as president of the society's foundation from 1991 until 2009. He was a passionate Nebraska football fan. Miller and his wife, Rosemary, who died in 2004, were married 54 years. They had four children. Their first child, Polly, was 8 when she died in 1959 after an accident. Their other three children survive: George Miller and Margaret Zarybnicky of Omaha and Elizabeth Miller of Merrimack, N.H. Other survivors include brothers James and Jack Miller, both of Papillion, and a grandson.
