As such, access is limited to those with DOD ID and direct family members of those interred. As such, access is limited to those with DOD ID and direct family members of those interred. The base was originally established as Fort Crook Army Post by an Act of Congress in 1890, with initial construction completed by 1896. This included the establishment of a cemetery, where the first burial was actually unmarked. Per a letter dated Aug 29, 1907 from the Post Quartermaster, “It appears that in the summer of 1897, exact date not known or ascertainable, Evelyn E. Thompson, about one week old, daughter of Principal Musician Thompson, 22nd Infantry, died and was buried in the Post Cemetery here, being the first internment therein. I am informed that this internment was never reported to this office or entered into the burial record, as it was the intention of the parents to disinter the remains and take or send them to their home in the East, which apparently was never done, as the remains are still buried here.” Evelyn’s grave was then marked with an appropriate headstone when the cemetery was moved in 1908. Pvt. Joseph Ferguson of Sellars, KY was the first official burial in September of 1897. While the cemetery is officially listed in National Cemeteries records as Fort Crook Cemetery, the post was renamed Offutt Air Force Base in January 1948 when it was handed over to the newly formed US Air Force, and the cemetery is now commonly referred to as the Offutt AFB Cemetery. The cemetery contains 300+ active duty and veteran personnel, as well as 90+ spouses, and 450+ infants and young children. A significant number of the infants died during a polio outbreak between 1951 and 1954. The cemetery is now “closed,” meaning only those with prior reservations or spouses of the interred can be buried there. As of January 2021, there have been 830+ interments, maintained under the oversight of the 55th Wing Mortuary Affairs office.
