He was behind the counter at the Windsor hotel, of which he has been proprietor for several months. All the guests were into dinner and the only other occupant of the office was his brother-in-law, Jud Woodring, who has been boarding at the hotel since the Woodring family has been away. Mr. Woodring had just come in from the wash room and was standing only four or five feet from Mr. Nestle when the accident occurred. The latter had taken a box from under the counter and was looking through it for some tags, for which the tobacco companies give prizes. Yesterday was Mrs. Nestle's birthday and George had in mind to exchange a lot of tags he had for some silverware for a present for his wife. While Jud was watching him, he ran his hand into the box. Almost immediately there was a flash, an explosion, and Jud saw George stagger along the counter towards him. He stepped to him, placed his arm partially around him, and said, "What's the matter, George? Are you hurt?" He received no reply and in a moment again asked, "Did you get shot, George?" But no sound came from the injured man's lips. Suddenly there was a slight quiver and the stricken man seemed to go all to pieces at once. His knees gave way and he fell in a limp and lifeless heap to the floor. Help was summoned and every effort made to resuscitate him, but it was in vain. His death was almost instantaneous. Upon investigation it was found that in the box with the tobacco tags were three revolvers which had come into Mr. Nestle's possession while he was sheriff. One was a 82 caliber, one a 38, and the third a 42. It was the 38 which had stricken the brave little man to his death. He was so short that he came to just the right height at the counter for the bullet to reach a vital part. As he thrust his hand into the box he must have struck the trigger or hammer of the revolver in some way, for it was discharged, the ball went through the side of the box, struck him in the breast, passed through his body and lodged just beneath the skin at his back. It struck his heart and killed him almost instantly. Probably only his extraordinary nerve held him up the moment or two necessary for him to get to where Mr. Woodring stood. George S. Nestle was born at Marshalltown, Iowa, February 15, 1861. In 1882 he came with his father, John E. Nestle, to Carroll and until the latter retired from business he had charge of the bakery. Afterward he engaged in business for himself until 1897, when he was elected sheriff of the county, he served four years and proved one of the most popular officials who ever held that position. Last spring he purchased the Windsor hotel furniture and has since been engaged in the hotel business. January 15, 1893, he was married to Miss Mary Buchheit, and she, with two little boys, are left to mourn his demise. Besides these, those of his immediate family are Mother Nestle and sister, Mrs. R.H. Nichols of Council Bluffs. George Nestle, everybody called him George, was one of the best liked men in Carroll. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the residence just north of the Windsor hotel which was used as a sort of annex to the hotel. The walk and lawn were crowded with people, together with the street adjoining, and the crowd over flowed into tbe court house yard until that was half filled with those anxious to pay a last tribute to the memory of their friend. Rev. W.H. Jordan of the Presbyterian church conducted the services. The funeral procession reaching from the city to the cemetery, being probably the largest assemblage of the kind ever gathered in Carroll. The pallbearers were W.H. Smith, D. Park, W.E. Sturges, O.D. Mitts, J.P. Minchen, T.E. Whitney. Besides the great number from the surrounding country who came to attend the funeral, there were present from out of town: Mr. and Mrs. B.H. Nichols of Council Bluffs, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McPherson of Eagle Grove, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. E. Lye of Sioux City, Gus. Breckle and Franz Weidle of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Buchheit of Manning, Mr. and Mrs. F. Mackie and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buchheit of Templeton, Miss Jennie Buchheit and Mr. and Mrs. Chan Cook of Boone.
