When he died, Mr. Holmes was Washington correspondent for the Grand Junction (Colo.) Daily Sentinel and the Lamar (Colo.) News. He was born in Pawtucket, R.I. and was graduated in 1904 from Brown University with Phi Betta Kappa honors. He began his news career as a reporter on the old Providence Telegram. In 1908 he joined the staff of the Rocky Mountain News and was managing editor of that paper from 1925 to 1928. Mr. Holmes came to Washington in 1928 as a member of the Scripps-Howard staff, a position he filled for 10 years. In 1938 he entered the Government as an information officer with the National Youth Administration and later was with the War Department. He served in the same capacity with the War Assets Administration and the Defense Electric Power Administration. At one time during World War II he was on the public relations staff of Lt. Gen. Brehon Somervell when the general was chief of the Army Service Forces. Mr. Holmes was the author of "The Story of Walter Scott Lenox" and "Yes, This Is Washington." He was a life member of the Kiwanis Club and a member of the Cosmos Club and National Press Club here and the Mile-High Club in Denver. He was formerly married to Kathleen Sexton, a newspaperwoman who died in 1943. Survivors are his widow, Hortense B., and a daughter by a previous marriage, Mrs. Herman Russell, Baltimore. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Robert Pumphrey funeral home in Bethesda. Burial will be in Parklawn Cemetery.
