The deceased was born in Westmoreland county, Penn., June 20, 1825, where he worked on a farm, but in his teens was apprenticed to a wagon maker, where he put in three years learning the trade. In 1849 he was married to Miss Susan Gibbs, a native of Bedford county, Penn., and in 1856 they moved to Mt. Pleasant, Ill., where they farmed and Mr. Slonecker worked part of the time at his trade. To this union ten children were born, eight of whom are living, all being present at the funeral, as follows: Alonzo, James, Charles and John, and Mrs. Joseph Slonecker, Mrs. T. C. Sampson, Mrs. Geo. Dewitt, of Colorado Springs, and Mrs. McLain of Oconto, Nebr. In 1869 the family moved to Nebraska and took a homestead in F township, four miles west of Seward, where they resided for many years, where the children grew to manhood and womanhood. Several years ago Mr. and Mrs. Slonecker moved to Seward, where they have since resided. In the early days of the settlement of Seward county, Uncle George Slonecker's was the stopping place of many who had come from the east to make homes in the west, and the hospitality of the Slonecker home was known far and wide. The deceased won and retained the high esteem and friendship of a large circle of friends, who will miss his cheerful greeting and words of encouragement. Always of a happy, cheerful disposition, a true staunch friend, to know him was to admire him as a good man. Funeral services were conducted from the M. E. church, of which the deceased was a member, on Monday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, Rev. Philip Smith and Dr. George Gallagher officiating. Interment was made in the north cemetery. The pallbearers were his four sons: Alonzo, James, Charles and John, and his sons-in-law, T. C. Sampson and Joseph Slonecker. Blue Valley Blade, Seward, NE, Wed, July 8, 1908 George Slonecker, for the past thirty-five years a resident of this county, died at his home in Seward Sunday, July 5, after an illness that had extended back for a period of several weeks. When Mr. Slonecker first came to this county he first settled on land four miles northwest of town, where he made his home for many years. Later he moved to Seward, however, where the remaining years of his life were spent. Coming to Nebraska at the time he did Mr. Slonecker and his family passed through the trials and privations incident to pioneer life, but he lived to see the state develop from its primitive condition to one of the most properous in all the union. The deceased was born in Westmoreland county, Pa., June 20, 1825, and died July 6, 1908, being 83 years and 15 days of age. He was married to Susan Gibbs Sept. 18, 1849, and removed from Pennsylvania to Illinois in 1854, and from there to Nebraska in 1869. There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Slonecker ten children, eight of whom, with their mother, still survive. The surviving children were all present at the death of their father, and are as follows: Mrs. Belle DeWitt of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Mrs. Lizzie McLain of Oconto, Nebr.; Lon (Alonzo) Slonecker of Edgar; James, John and Charles of Seward; Mrs. Joe Slonecker of Staplehurst and Mrs. T. C. Sampson of Seward. Mr. Sloncecker had taken an active part in church work until failing health deprived him of this privilege, he having been a member of the Methodist church, and funeral services were conducted from this church at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon by Rev. Gallagher of Fairmont, a former pastor, who was assisted by Rev. Phillip Smith, the persent pastor. Interment was made in the family lot in the north cemetery.
