He was preceded in death by his father in 1921, and by his mother in 1929, and by two brothers in infancy.When still a boy he came to Kansas in the spring of 1880 with his parents and sisters. He grew to manhood in Athelstane township and there made his home most of his life. He had recently mode Longford his home.He was married to Alice Wiletta Peck at Abilene, Kas., May 6, 1896, and spent 48 years of happy married life with her.Mr. Smith became a Christian at an early age and united with the Evangelical church in Pennsylvania. When coming to Kansas he united with the Ebenezer Evangelical church, which his father helped to organize. He remained a member of the Ebenezer church until two months ago, when his membership was transferred to the Longford Evangelical church. Mr. Smith served the church as teacher, Sunday school superintendent, trustee, steward and class leader, as well as in many other ways. He lived an active and happy life until the end. His sudden death caused his family to feel deeply their loss, but they take comfort in a life well lived.Besides his wife, Mr. Smith leaves to mourn his death, two daughters, Mrs. A. V. Carter and Mrs. Wilfred Carter, both of Concordia; two sons, Frank of Louisiana, Mo., and George of Paducah, Ky.; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Clark of Topeka and Mrs. George Beitzel of Manhattan; besides other relatives and a host of friends.The funeral service was held in the Longford Evangelical church Thursday afternoon of June 8, 1944. Rev. G. C. Gilbert preached the sermon. Rev. H. T. Wright and Rev. DeWitt T. Miller had a part in the service. The body bearers were Walter Morley, Morrison Meade, Fred Greep, Victor Rogniat, Lew Vasey and James Livengood. The singers were Mrs. Bessie Kissling, Mrs. Dorothy Kiekel, Ted McCready and DeWitt Miller, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Ina Dieter. The women who had charge of the flowers were Mrs. Beulah Bane, Mrs. Marie Ferguson and Mrs. Dorothy Achison.Burial was made in the Athelstane cemetery. The large assembly of relatives and friends, and the beautiful flowers were eloquent expressions of regard and sympathy." Obit provided by Linda Cunningham (#47644600)
