Born July 30, 1924, in Leonardtown, he was the son of the late May Swann Key Barnes and George Thomas Barnes. He was the husband of Catherine Waring Barnes, whom he married Aug. 21, 1948, at Christ Episcopal Church in Chaptico. He was the father of Ann Waring Barnes of Columbia, Janet May Barnes of St. Leonard, George Compton Barnes of Haywood and Robert M. Cornelius, of Lusby. Mr. Barnes was the brother of Nelly Key Thompson of Newport News, Va. and the late Frances Key Herring. He is also survived by three grandchildren. A life long resident of St. Mary's County, Mr. Barnes spent his early years at Indian Town on the Wicomico River. His first five elementary school years were at Sampson's Harbor on the Patuxent River, followed by three years at Tudor Hall on Breton Bay. In December 1957, his family moved to Piney Point Creek on the Potomac River. Mr. Barnes graduated from Great Mills High School in 1941 and attended the University of Maryland. When Mr. Barnes had a family of his own, every summer Sunday afternoon was spent cruising the river in his runabout with family and friends, anchoring a spot to enjoy a meal. He farmed with his uncle, Compton Swann until 1958 and then worked as a civil service electronics technician at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, retiring after 26 years of service in 1984. Mr. Barnes was also a school bus contractor for 50 years, retiring in 2002. He was Episcopalian, becoming a member of St. George's Episcopal Church in 1938, where he worshipped and served for the remainder of his life. He was regularly elected to the vestry in three-year terms for 52 years and was elected senior or junior warden many times. He sang tenor in the choir for 53 years and fully participated in all church activities. Mr. Barnes was a mentor for many of the young engineers when he worked at Patuxent River, a number of whom remained his friends. A member of St. Mary's County Farm Bureau for more that 56 years, he was elected to the board of directors for a number of terms. He was a 4-H Club leader for 10 years, a member of the board of directors of the 2nd District Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, and was in charge of bingo at all of the carnivals until the late two years. He was appointed by the county commissioners to the Ethics Commission where he served two terms. He was a charter member of the Potomac River Association board of directors.
