He had enjoyed his usual good health until a few days before the death, when returning from Corning, where he had been visiting his nephew, Hon. W. O. Mitchell and other friends, he walked part of the way from the depot to the residence of his son-in-law, Harvey Wilson. Read More	Last Wednesday morning, in a pleasant little cottage on the border of our village, George Hobson died. He had enjoyed his usual good health until a few days before the death, when returning from Corning, where he had been visiting his nephew, Hon. W. O. Mitchell and other friends, he walked part of the way from the depot to the residence of his son-in-law, Harvey Wilson. A few hours after his arrival he was stricken with paralysis, which occurred on the 29th. He lived until the following Wednesday morning, when he died as peacefully as a little child goes to sleep. His funeral was from the residence of Mr. Wilson and was of the simple, old fashion he desired. Uncle George, as his friends loved to call him, was past 89 years old. For 41 years he had lived in Montgomery County, and much of the prosperity, very much of the improved conditions we enjoy, owe their origin and growth to his forethought and labor. There are only a few now living who can go back over those forty-four years and recall the conditions that surround the few scatted cabins, separated by miles of prairie, with only the earth beneath and God’s canopy overhead. Pioneers of Iowa never took kindly to the sold house. In some way a cabin would be built and though small and meagerly furnished, was a home. Elder Campbell read at his funeral: “George Hobson was a great man, he was a good man.” His presence was a blessing, his friendship a taught. He was born and lived until early manhood in Indiana, a few miles from Louisville, Kentucky. He knew personally George D. Prentice, editor of the Louisville Journal, a whig newspaper of the ante-bellum days which he used to read. It was the predecessor of the now Carrier Journal. Both editor and newspaper are long since gone. He was a Methodist when Methodism was young, when the example, yes and the face of John Wesley were familiar, welcome remembrances. Eighty years of the 10th century. How little do we realize the extent of what that means. George Hobson had grown to manhood, before there was a railroad or telegraph in the world. Only three years before he was born, the first steamboat was launched. What wonderful changes he has seen. Like other old men, he gradually withdrew from the active business life scene that he once took a keen interest in, was a part of, saw them going on, progressing without his aid. Was it a melancholy pleasure to him? Whether a pleasure or a regret, it was inevitable. When the eye grown firm and the hand forgets its cunning, nature, provides others to take up what we lay down. Though Father Hobson was not a man of polished manners, he yet possessed great kindness of heart, was unselfish, always courteous. He was a true representative of the old school of nature, refined in gentleness now unhappily passing away. As we remarked at his funeral, “only an old man can properly talks of these things.” And is the present generation sufficiently thoughtful of the old pioneers who laid the foundation of our present greatness, made possible the countless convinces now so common as to be no longer recognized? In the country district schools, when George Hobson was young, {and there were no other schools, colleges being almost, unknown} was taught the rudiments of politeness. Boys upon meeting a stranger were taught to remove their hats and bow to him, girls were taught to make a courtesy, {called catchy by the children of that time}, the object being to teach the child to show respect to the stranger, especially if an old person, and so the habit of politeness grew with the child, and when old it still “abided in him.” George Hobson never went to a dancing school, never attended a class where the society graces were taught. Yet he did know of the Christian graces and he did not fail in his respect to his fellow man. He was a Mason when Masonry stood for something besides initiations and banquets. Few remain of this generation to which he belonged, though the mark is indelibly fixed upon the world in the untold thousand of the things, big and little which go to make up the great aggregate of what we call human progress and advancement. George Hobson died as he had living, an honest man. He did his duty in his day and generation and of him it may beside the world is better for his having lived in it. J.S. B.
