Ward, a prominent resident of the Calvary section, dropped dead Friday; while cutting grass in his yard, he was suddenly seized with a stroke of apoplexy and died immediately. At the time of his death he was eighty-two years of age. The deceased, son of the late William Ward and Marie Ward well-known and respected family of the Calvary section, was in his early days a follower of the water. For years he made his living in this way and made many tried and true friends along the water fronts where he was so familiarly known and so widely liked and respected for his honesty, his industriousness, and for his complete observance of the Golden Rule. He was a man who was ever ready to meet his fellowman halfway and often better than halfway and this likable characteristic made him countless friends. In later years his advanced age caused him to retire from the familiar business of following the water and turn to farming for a living. In this as in all his former activities, he was successful and earned the reputation of being an upright Christian gentleman. He was a devout member of the Asbury church where he attended services and took an active part in all their projects and leaves a host of friends, contacted both in business and in church activities that were shocked and grieved to learn of his passing. He was the father of the late Gus Ward whose wit, humor and intelligence endeared him to everyone made him a well-known figure throughout this territory. Mr. Ward is survived by his widow Mrs. Annie Ward, and four daughters, Mrs. James Moore, Mrs. Thomas Coulbourne, Mrs. Ralph Nelson and Mrs. Walter Sears, all of whom reside in Calvary. One brother, Mr. Thomas Ward and one sister, Mrs. Eliza Sterling, also survive. Funeral services were held from his late home on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with the Rev. J. R. Bicking, pastor of the Immanuel M. E. Church, officiating. Pall bearers were Dale Ward, Lincoln Ward, Thomas Coulbourne, Lionel Moore, all grandchildren of the deceased, and Lemuel Ward and Weldon Ward, nephews of Mr. Ward. Interment was in Asbury Cemetery. His daughter, Mrs. Lemuel Ward, of Crisfield, was the informant. Asbury United Methodist Church marriage records cite: George W. Ward, 23, Boatsman of Somerset County, MD married Ida Lawson, 18, of Somerset County, MD, on 24 Apr 1878. Rev. George W. Townsend, pastor of Asbury M.E. Church, conducted the ceremony.
