Description	:	George was a son of Joseph Wear, born in New Jersey and Fredricka M. Kahler, born in Germany. In 1878, George came to Kansas with his parents and settled on their farm located southwest of Halstead where he lived for 42 years. In 1878, George came to Kansas with his parents and settled on their farm located southwest of Halstead where he lived for 42 years. On May 1, 1895 a powerful tornado brought death and destruction near Halstead, Kansas. Among those killed were George's mother Fredricka and 3 of his siblings Grace, Herman and Matilda. George's father Joseph was badly injured, but was able to attend the funeral services held May 2nd. This tornado is now rated as an EF5 tornado and among the top ten in Kansas history. It formed in northwest Sedgwick County about 4:30 pm, passing west of Halstead and ending 6 miles northwest of the town of Newton. At a minimum, 25 farms were leveled and a few vanished entirely. Four deaths occurred in each of two families who reportedly hesitated to take cover in their storm cellars. It is very possible they didn't recognize the huge funnel as a tornado. Debris was carried for many miles with dead livestock found everywhere. As many as 11 other victims may have eventually died, therefore the "possibly 19" listed among the fatalities. (National Weather Service, 2018) George Wear married Mina Pearl Barnes in 1899. From the Halstead Independent, July 1907; "Work was commenced on a fine new house which George W. Wear will build on the old home farm in Lake Township." In the spring of 1920, they moved to a farm located just west of Wichita. They next moved to Wichita, where they resided at 212 N. Glenn Street. "George Wear Improving - C. A. Smith and Rev. A. C. Brown were in Wichita last week and called at the Wichita hospital to visit Geo. W. Wear. They delivered a resolution of sympathy to Mr. Wear from the Young Men's Bible Class of the Halstead Methodist church hoping for Mr. Wear's speedy recovery and saying in part, 'This is called forth by members who have known you during their lifetime and know your life of Christian fortitude.' Mr. Wear is now able to be in a wheel chair and take a trip to the sun room, and will be able to return home soon." (Halstead newspaper, Feb. 16, 1945) From the Halstead newspaper dated October 1950; "Last Rites Held For George Wear - Funeral services for George W. Wear, who passed away in the Wichita Hospital on Saturday evening October 7 were conducted on Tuesday morning, October 10, at 10:00 a.m. from the Culbertson Funeral Chapel in Wichita, with graveside services at Halstead Cemetery. Rev. O. Ray Burgess, pastor of West Side Christian Church in Wichita, was the officiating minister. Burial was in the family lot with the Culbertson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Ralph Williamson, George Wherritt, both of Wichita; John Baughman, of Newton; Deston Chapin, Hans Vollweider and John Thompson all of Halstead. Mr. Wear, pioneer of Harvey County, was born in Elkhart, Indiana on April 8, 1875 and passed away Saturday, Oct. 7 at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 29 days. He was the son of Joseph and Fredricka Kahler Wear. He came to Kansas with his parents at the age of three and settled on the farm southwest of Halstead, where he lived 42 years. While a young man he became a member of the Methodist Church. On November 11, 1899 he was married to Pearl M. Barnes. To this union two children were born. In March 1920 he and his family moved to Wichita where he spent the remaining years of his life. He lived a very full and active life and made many friends. He was a sincere and devoted husband and father. Surviving him are his daughter, Mrs. Hazelle Pearson of Wichita; a son, Orville W. Wear of Halstead; four grandchildren, Norman Bechtel of Wichita, Kans., Mrs. Lois Wear Brown of Kearney, Nebraska, Maurice Wear of Miltonvale, Kans., Gordon Gwinn serving in the United States Navy; one great grandson, David Eugene Brown; one sister, Mrs. Maude Sanders of Downey, California, and many other relatives and relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife who passed away March 21, 1940."
