Russ Czaplewski transcribed the diaries in 2000. history.nebraska.gov/collections/george-warren-joy-rg5223am Contributor: Russ C (46877662) ======================== The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, September 5, 1929 George Warren Joy was born at Battle Creek, Michigan, May 22, 1847, at the age of three years and moved with his parents onto a farm in Berry county (sic), Michigan, where he made his home until the fall of 1872 when the family moved to Nebraska, living at Lincoln the first winter, then coming to Nuckolls county (sic), where he has made his home ever since. In February, 1865, he with his brother Albert enlisted in their country's service for one year during the war. They were mustered out November 11th, at Memphis, Tenn. He made his home with his parents until coming to Nebraska, working on a farm in the summer and teaching school in the winter. He also taught several terms in Nebraska. March 12th, 1876, he was married to Miss Elizabeth E. Templin of Thayer county (sic), to which union were born seevn (sic) children, four girls and three boys, all of whom except Minnie, the oldest, survive to mourn his departure to a better world. In the winter of '79 and '80 he and his wife were converted and joined the M.E. church at Mt. Zion. Later they transferred to the Methodist church of Oak of which he was a member at the time of his death on August 28th, 1929, aged 82 years, 3 months, 6 days. Those left to mourn are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth E. Joy, the children: Mrs. Edith Avers, Edgar, Nebr., Mrs. Elmina Corman, Superior, Nebraska, Warren H. Joy, Campbell, Nebr., George C. Joy, Lincoln, Nebr., Ralph A. Joy, Ruskin, Nebr., and Miss Nellie, at home; also twenty-five grand children and four great grand children, one brother Mr. Frank Joy of Arnold, Nebr., and one sister, Mrs. Lenora Winslow of Fargo, No. Dak. Funeral services were held at the Oak Methodist church Sunday at 1:30 p.m., Rev. A.C. Bates of Davenport, in charge, and Rev. Priestly assisting. Burial was made in the Edgar cemetery. The American Legion of Edgar, had charge of the services at the grave, and presented the family with the flag which draped the casket.
