Description	:	George Washington Higgins was born in Port William, Clinton County, Ohio on August 6, 1834, and died September 27, 1915, aged eighty one years, one moth, and twenty one days. At the age of 12, he was left an orphan and lived with his grandmother until his marriage. On September 2, 1858, he was joined in marriage to Miss Harriett E. Powers, Rev. I. I. Read More	George Washington Higgins was born in Port William, Clinton County, Ohio on August 6, 1834, and died September 27, 1915, aged eighty one years, one moth, and twenty one days. At the age of 12, he was left an orphan and lived with his grandmother until his marriage. On September 2, 1858, he was joined in marriage to Miss Harriett E. Powers, Rev. I. I. Beal performing the ceremony. To this union were born nine children, seven sons and two daughters. Eddie and Georgie died in infancy and the living are: William and Ace at home, Charles and Lewis of Villisca, James of Maitland, Missouri and Mrs. George Neely and Mrs. Joseph Beavers of Villisca. His wife survives him also sixteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. All were present at the funeral. In 1861, while living in Adams County, Ohio, Mr. Higgins enlisted as a soldier in the Civil War and served three years and five months in Co. D., 11th Ohio Cavalry, under Colonel Collins and Captain Van Winkle. He served with the soldiers who built Fort Collins,, Colorado. At the close of the war he moved with his family to North Henderson, Mercy County, Illinois in 1872. In the fall of 1880 they moved to Villisca where they have since resided. From 1890 to 1898 Mr. Higgins was janitor of the high school building and is well remembered by all the pupils who attended either school during those years. He was in good health until about a year ago and since last March he started to fail. His last illness of 6 weeks and he asked the children to stay with him until he told them he had been advice long enough and had lived a long long life and was ready and willing to go and have no more suffering. He was conscious and talked to the children until the last. He provided a home for his children and took a motherless baby into his home and kept him for eight years. A number of relatives were always welcome and could stay withUncle George, as he was familiarly known. The funeral services were held from the home on East Sixth Street Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by the G.A.R. and the John A. Logan Circle, and Rev. E. S. Menoher. Interment was in the Villisca Cemetery. The services were attended by a large number of relatives and friends. Villisca Review, Saturday, October 2, 1915, page 4 CO. D., 11 D. V. C.; G. A. R. Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio. 1886 Enlisted as a Private on 21 November 1861 at the age of 25 Enlisted in Company D, 11th Cavalry Regiment Ohio on 21 November 1861. Mustered out on 01 April 1865 Civil War pension index shows George W. Higgins received an invalid's pension (Application # 828978 & Certificate # 617210) on July 29, 1890. He died September 27, 1915 at Villisca, Iowa. His widow, Harriet E. Higgins, received a pension (Application # 1053998 & Certificate # 802150) on October 8, 1915.Both pensions received in Iowa.
