Smith, long time resident of this city, at his home at Eleventh and Wall street, Clay Center, Wednesday afternoon, July 10. He was 82 years, four months and 18 days. Mr. Smith was quiet and unassuming, but those who knew him recognized his worth. His life story follows: George Washington Smith, a son of Charles and Eliza Smith was born February 22, 1859 in Dayton, O., and died in Clay Center July 10, 1941. He came to Kansas with his parents in 1870 among the early pioneers of Clay county. He became a boiler maker and foundry worker and was a fine and industrious workman. He was married to Ella Smith of Kansas City, Mo., on November 25, 1890. There were three children born to this union, Fred, who preceded his father in death and Frank and Charles of Clay Center. Besides the children there are two brothers and three sisters who survive him. They are Walter Smith of Oak Hill, Will Smith of Lost Springs, Kas., Mrs. Jack Sylvester of Omaha, Neb., Mrs. Will Sargent of Oak Hill, Mrs. Amos Burgman of Miltonvale, and Mrs. Julius Otto of North Dakota. There are also a number of nephews and nieces who survive him and many friends of long standing. Before Mr. Smith became unable to carry on his active work he was employed at the Williamson mill for 20 years and was a faithful employe. The ranks of George Washington Smith's generation are growing fewer in number but the Commonwealth they established will live long after they are forgotten. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Peterson-Neill Chapel in Clay Center, with Rev. L. F. Arend of the First Methodist church in charge. Mrs. Bert Sorem and Miss Leora Adams, with Miss Margaret Humfeld as accompanist, sang "The Old Rugged Cross," "What a Friend We Have in Jesus," and "When We Get to the End of the Way." Burial was in Greenwood cemetery. A number of relatives came from a distance, and long-time friends joined in honoring the memory of the departed one."
