Read More	The Times, April 14,1946, Page 1 "Smith: -- The passing of "Grandma Smith" as she was lovingly known by everyone in the Oak Hill community, claimed another of the pioneer mothers of Clay county. She had been a resident of this county since 1870, and during the 56 years spent in the Oak Hill community, she witnessed the coming and going of nearly every person there. She had many relatives and a multitude of friends, who recognized her good qualities and enjoyed her friendship. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Dunable and she was born in Sunhouser, Germany, on December 15, 1840, and died at her home in Oak Hill Wednesday morning, April 7, 1926, aged 85 years, 3 months and 23 days. She came to the United States with her parents when 9 years of age. She was united in marrriage with Charles Smith, at Dayton, Ohio, in 1858. To this union were born eight children, 4 sons and 4 daughters. One son, Ernest and his father preceded the mother to the Great Beyond. The 7 children who survive their aged mother and mourn their loss are Mrs. Will Largent, Mrs. Amon Burgman and Walter Smith of Oak Hill, Mrs. Effie Sylvester of Omaha, Mrs. Julius Otto of Colorado, Will Smith of Lost Springs, and George Smith of Clay Center, besides a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of neighbors and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Smith came to Clay county in 1870 and settled on a farm three miles southeast of Oak Hill, where they lived for eighteen years, then they moved to Oak Hill and the family hoem has been there ever since. Grandma Smith came into this country when it was new and wild. She took her share of suffering and hardships during the Civil War and the trying years that followed and she could truly say that she saw the desert transformed into a flower garden. Gone, but not forgotten,is this pioneer, for her memory still lives. She was a member of the Oak Hill Presbyeterian church and funeral services were held in that church Friday afternoon. April 9, at 2 o'clock, being conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. H. Bleam, and her weary body was laid to rest in the Rose Meron cemetery. The floral offering was large and beautiful. Appropriate musical numbers were furnished by a choir composed of Mrs. A. Yeaney, Mrs. O. U. Need, Mrs. E. Clemons, Fred Binder and Owen McNeill. The service was attended by a multitude of relatives and long-time friends of the deceased."
