George was married to Shirley in 1947 and was a long-time member of St. Stephen's Anglican Church. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by son, George Jr. "Bill" and wife Diana; daughter, Joanne (Bob) LeBlanc, both of Chester; grandchildren, Erin, Adam (Krystie), Jeff (Carla); great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Camden and Jessie; long-time special loving friend, Gloria (Doll) Porter, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is survived by son, George Jr. "Bill" and wife Diana; daughter, Joanne (Bob) LeBlanc, both of Chester; grandchildren, Erin, Adam (Krystie), Jeff (Carla); great-grandchildren, Maxwell, Camden and Jessie; long-time special loving friend, Gloria (Doll) Porter, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by wife, Shirley (Publicover); daughter, Susan Elizabeth (five months); sisters, Margaret, Marie, Elizabeth; and brothers, Theodore, Frank, and Wharton. George was a veteran of the Second World War joining in 1940 with the Halifax Rifles and RCASC, going overseas in 1943 to England, North Africa, Italy, and N.W. Europe. After the war, he joined his brother Ted in the wholesale and retail fish business, later incorporating the business into Hilchie Bros. Ltd. in the 60's. George took over the business in 1971, and retired in 1993. He was a life member of F.E. Butler Br. 44, Royal Canadaian Legion, past-president, recipient of Meritorious Service Medal and Palm Leaf; past Master, Clarke Lodge 61 AF & AM, received 50 Year Jewel in 2005; past grand steward of Grand Lodge, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island; honorary member of Chester Volunteer Fire Department; 1994 recipient of the "Ways" (We appreciate your service) award for his volunteer Legion service for Lunenburg County; Boy Scout Group Committee; past member Chester Golf Club and original member of E. Pew Memorial Rink board. In his later years, he enjoyed retirement by playing pool at the Legion, visiting friends and watching hockey, golf and baseball on tv. For the past few months, George was residing in the Veterans Unit, Fisherman's Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg. The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to all staff and volunteers for the wonderful care George received during his time there. Arrangements are entrusted to Davis Funeral Home, Chester. Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held Monday, September 17th at 2 p.m. in St. Stephen's Anglican Church, Chester with Rev. Ian Wissler officiating. Family flowers only. Reception will follow the service at Branch No. 44 Royal Canadian Legion, Chester. A Clarke Lodge No. 61 service will be held on Sunday night at 6 p.m. in the funeral home. Legion service will be held Sunday night at 6:45 p.m. in the funeral home and with public visitation following from 7-9 p.m. Family committal will be held in Bayview Cemetery at a later date.
