George Bijjani, a native of Beirut, Lebanon, who will receive his Ph. D. from the University of Illinois this fall has been appointed to the science department of Monticello College. Mrs. Bijjani, a professor of entymology at the University of Dubuque, will remain in Dubuque this year with their three children in order to continue special treatment for their eight-year-old daughter. Bijjani, who was assisted in his early education by the American Presbyterian Missions of Lebanon, hopes to return to his homeland at some later time to contribute what he can from the country from his study and research in science. A speaker with a fluent command of English from his years of study and teaching in this country, Bijjani has offered his services to the Monticello faculty speakers' bureau for speaking engagements before Alton groups. He has contributed his time principally to religious organizations. After attending the American Boys' School in Sidon, Lebanon, Bijjani studied for one year at the American University of Beirut, then came to the United States to earn his B.A. degree at Alma College in Alma, Mich. He next attended the University of Illinois, receiving his M.S. in 1936, and was an instructor in science at the university. In 1937 he returned to teach in Transjordan for two years, followed by eight years as professor in the science department of the American University of Beirut, where he met and married his Iowa-born wife, a teacher there at the time. The Bijjanis returned to the United States in 1947 so that Mr. Bijjani could complete work at the University of Illinois toward his doctorate which will be conferred this fall. He has interrupted his study with teaching and biological research at the University of Illinois, and a year on the faculty of the University of Dubuque. He holds the M.S. degree in entomology and has done graduate work at Oberlin College in theology. BIJJANI IS DEAD Dr. George Yousef Bijjani, 1004 Rural St., head of the Biology Department of the College of Emporia, died Sunday afternoon after suffering a heart attack at Springfield, Ill., where he was visiting his foster mother, Miss Grace Freidinger. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the First Presbyterian Church. They will be conducted by Dr. Stafford S. Studer. Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Doctor Bijjani had been head of the Biology Department at the College of Emporia since 1957. He also was a Presbyterian minister and for the past 10 years had been pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Howard. He had served as interim pastor of several other churches in Kansas, among them the Presbyterian Church in Holton. The son of Yousef Abdulhad and Mithmne Bijjani, he was born May 10th, 1907, in Kahale, Lebanon. His parents and eight of his ten brothers and sisters died during World War I and he was cared for as a child by the American Red Cross. He spent a few years in the Near East Relief Orphanage near Sidon, Lebanon, and later was adopted by Miss Friedinger. A graduate of Gerard Institute, a Presbyterian Mission high school in Sidon, he attended the American University in Beirut, Lebanon, for a year, then transferred to Alma, Mich., College, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1934. His Master of Science degree and his Doctor of Philosophy degree were awarded from the University of Illinois. After teaching in the Bishop's School, Amman, Jordan, from 1937 until 1939, he was a member of the faculty of the American University in Beirut until 1947, when he returned to the United States. Before coming to Emporia he taught at the University of Dubuque, Iowa, Monticello College in Illinois and Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa. Dr. Bijjani was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Emporia, and of several professional organizations, among them the American Entomological Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. George Bijjani was married on June 26th, 1940, in Beirut, to Anabel Elizabeth Clark, who survives.
